Primaries aren't always the greatest indicator of who the better General Election candidate is. And in the MAGA RINO era, this is very common.
Dave McCormick couldn't beat your fellow MAGA RINO Dr. Oz in the primary. Oz lost to Fetterman, who has brain damage. McCormick ran again 2 years later and defeated Bob Casey, a 3-term incumbent and part of PA royalty. If McCormick beat Oz he would've beat Fetterman.
Kimberly Yee was losing to Kari Lake-Abrams by 3-1 and 4-1 margins leading up to the AZ Gubernatorial Primary. It got so bad that Yee had to drop out and run for Treasurer. Lake-Abrams lost her General Election, and on the same ballot, Yee won by double digits and received nearly 120K more votes on the same ballot. Yee couldn't beat Lake-Abrams in a Primary. If Yee was the nominee, she'd be Governor right now.

The only reason the race was that close was because Trump was the nominee. Other than RINO Vivek, pretty much every other Republican would've defeated Kamala, and quite a few would've won by more than Trump.
In 2016, Trump barely squeaked by Hillary and needed Jill Stein to play spoiler in the rust belt just to hang on. John Kasich and Marco Rubio, 2 milquetoast bores, were destroying Hillary in national polling by 7 and 4 points respectively. If either of them were the nominee, they would've won every Trump state in addition to NH, NV, MN, and possibly CO and VA.

No, he made the right decision. November is going to be a disaster and 2028 is going to look like 2008. He knew that would happen if Trump was the nominee and won the WH, and that's why he ran, to save the country long term. He knew that whoever was VP would be a sacrificial lamb in 2028, which will likely be Vance.

I am not voting for a name. I am voting for action. We have had a super majority for the past two years and have nothing meaningful to show for it. We have not fully funded our DHS/ICE efforts. We have not passed the SAVE ACT. The Senate has deliberately blocked efforts by the President to make recess appointments. Not going to vote for anyone who gaveled in a recess session or refuses to rein in the Parliamentarian. Not voting for more dysfunction in our Senate (Ashley Moody) or a gubernatorial candidate that was appointed by the Florida GOP (he is going to win anyway).
It does not get more simple than that. If they had even a decent product I would do what I have done for over forty years. The ball is in their court. Get your job done and stop being shadow Democrats.

Obama signed 276 EOs during his two terms in office.
Joe Biden signed 162 EOs in his one term in office.
Trump has signed 508 EOs during his first and present terms in office.
Of that 508, 288 have been signed in the first two years of his 2nd term. Trump has signed more EOs in two years than Obama did in 8.
