It's pretty simple, really. Check their ID cards.
Thailand does not allow the gender at birth to be changed on their national ID card. I was in Bangkok for a couple of weeks during the summer. I visited a couple of the classy, high end bars on Soi 11. The places were full of absolutely stunning young women. Absolutely perfect...hair, makeup, bodies, well dressed. The establishments were checking their IDs as they came in the door..and they weren't checking for their age. Although ladyboys may be somewhat accepted in Thai society, those establishments don't want them there.
