in this particular case, it's a bad look for the commandant to bitch about the president ordering you somewhere, imo
Agreed. He should’ve done it in private. But generals are just politicians in uniform. This is just political games.

Honestly though it should be an army function. The Marines should be forward deployed and on ships. We should only be sending the army overseas in the event of all our war. I don’t even think Army SF should exist.

And I would be inclined to agree with all of that. However, the Commander-In-Chief gave the military a mission. It’s the Commandant’s job to carry out the mission. He can voice his reservations to him privately. However, it’s a horrible look for him to publicly blast a mission that he’s given.

Didnt know there was talk. But I don’t care. Whatever makes SOCOM smaller is good by me. Most of SOCOM should be disbanded imo.

The Marines should be parked on gator freighters off the coasts of Texas and California waiting for the word to go ashore.

Pretty sure those battalions floating around on a boat, for 6 months, would rather be "doing their job" at the southern border.

Pretty sure that's not how it's ever worked.

He didn’t come out to the press

The media got their hands on private messages between him and other leadership

Problem is someone leaked it

Actually, protecting the safety of this country at home and abroad from foreign or domestic enemies. Is, in fact, the military’s job.

There are several documents that have more authority than your or your leader that say otherwise. Give them a look.

Not sure why we don't just militarize our northern and southern border like most countries do.

“Most countries” don’t militarize their borders.

Eta: I would understand it if he said, “we’re a maritime force, our job is to be forward deployed. This job is better suited for the Army or Nat’l Guard.”

He needs to spell this out for you? What part of Marine Corps combat readiness do you not understand? Rotating units to provide border security does little to nothing to enhance the Mission Essential Tasks (i.e. readiness) of Marine units, and adds additional 'deployment time' to an already strained force.

And I would agree with him in that sense. However, he did not say that. And furthermore, he’s essentially disregarding what his own commander tells him to do.

When did he disobey the POTUS? Offering a sobering reality of fiscal restraints is something you don't want from the CMC? Budget shortfalls are forcing the Marine Corps to forgo essential combat training this summer that increases readiness and generates capacity to support global force management. We also are ignoring the $3.2B bill for Hurricane Florence disaster relief which is impacting readiness and the quality of life of our Marines and their families. I'm with his assessment.

Not a good look for the Department of the Navy.

When I was enlisted it was drilled into our heads from day 1 not to ever publicly complain about anyone in the chain of command.

Yeah, maybe.

You sound like one of those guys that will spend the rest of his life telling Marines at the bar that you would have served in the Corps, if it wasn't for that damn knee of yours...

He 100 percent wouldn't say that if his marines were sent to guard the border of another country.

And that's the problem. Too much time and money spent in other countries protecting their borders and interests.
