1. The problems as you see them

2. What you would like to see happen

3. What you are expecting Trump to accomplish

4. Your satisfaction level with 3

I'll go first:

1. Too much IP theft and too much incursive spying and cyber warfare that has gone almost unanswered by the US (i.e. Biden). Too much reliance on Chinese manufacturing of critical items (pharma, medical, rare earths etc. A trade imbalance that is partially obscured because it's "outsourced" to other Asian countries.

2. I would like to see the Chinese on full alert that we will respond in-kind (or worse) to any cyber warfare or aggressive espionage. I'd like to see some rational attempt to right-size the issue of critical manufacturing, ideally by engaging Europe et al and not putting them under the gun simultaneously.

3. Very nominal "gains" that will be mostly headlines, will give Trump an off-ramp and then very little change long-term.

4. No, but it's a repeat of his 1st term. His appointed trade negotiators actually were extremely hardcore and on point, but Trump didn't have the stomach to see it through. He likely won't this time either, although possibly he has slightly more stomach for it.

Wild Cards: JD Vance is a bigger believer on this issue than Trump.

It will be a better deal than the one we had.

The IP issues is a weird one, there should be maximum and bipartisan agreement that something should be done about it but lots of politicians don't want to rock the boat and see nothing done about it

Bessent said on Monday that the only things that matter are AI and Quantum computing and to beat China to the punch on those 2 technology items. This certainly ties into the IP theft that China has engaged in. We're letting them start on 3rd base instead of making them develop their own tech and we're exhausting a lot of brainpower and capital to do it. I'm not sure what the fix is but it's a serious enough issue for Bessent to speak about it like it's a near zero sum game.

One question......

terms of deals agreed to OR terms of deals that the Chinese actually adhere to?

They never come through on their end.

Terms of deals you reasonably believe the US has the power to enforce.

Great read here:

quote:

Trump was their response. Not because he listened carefully—he didn’t—but because he at least acknowledged the grievances others had dismissed. He wasn’t subtle, and he wasn’t surgical, but he aimed squarely at the broken parts of the system. And whether through jokes, provocation, or sheer force of will, he moved things that had long refused to budge.

Thanks for linking to that piece. With our political battle lines so clearly drawn, it can be hard to find anything that seems like a fresh assessment of what is going on without falling into the trap of interpreting everything to fit one’s world view (“owning the libs,” “Orange Man Bad,” etc.). I feel like Holman Jenkins at WSJ achieves this with some regularity, and the piece you linked did so, as well, and from a little different perspective.
