In the year before his death from cirrhosis of the liver, Jack Kerouac appeared on the panel of a William F. Buckley “Firing Line” episode about the nascent Hippie movement. Obviously inebriated, Kerouac erratically yet valiantly sought to distance himself from a counter-cultural movement that often claimed the original Beat as their patron saint.
Kerouac argued his artistic documentation of his reckless questing as a youth should not be read as a license to burn down society but instead as an autographical expression of Kerouac’s misguided attempt to find spiritual fulfillment. Seen in this light, On The Road can be read as Kerouac’s erroneous effort to find the beatific in the false sirens of reckless promiscuity, drug binges and fast cars.
In an off-handed comment about the Vietnam War, Kerouac said that war was an excellent way to sell Jeeps. Though in a drunken stupor, Kerouac here demonstrated a better grasp of the military industrial complex than the erudite Buckley.

When the smart thing would have been to pay the frick attention to what's going on over there an get those resources OUT OF COUNTRY, safely, or at least to a stage where it can be retrieved.

This is a real shitshow. Worse than the fall of Saigon. These idiots actually believed that the Afghan army could hold the Taliban to a stalemate and prevent their taking of the country. All of this stuff that they are trying to do now (evacuations, etc.) should have been done weeks ago.
