I hope all the new hires have a clause in their new hire paperwork requiring them not to join a union.

Interesting. No strike clause, strike, get fired. Don't see a problem here.

Yup.

UPS had a strike in the mid 90s. I imagine this is when this language was inserted. I worked w/ their retirement plan at the time.

One of the union demands was that all the scabs were to be fired once they (regular employees) went back to work....and they were.

This made me laugh. If my boss told me this I'd laugh and say "See ya"

But the problem is if they plan on challenging this in arbitration, they can't quit.

The consensus opinion on this board seems to be that labor unions are pure evil, but without labor unions, American workers would be no better off than workers in third-world countries, and anyone familiar with the history of labor unions knows exactly what I'm talking about.

In most circumstances, I agree.

Teacher's union, UAW, Police/Firefighters union. Detrimental to pretty much everyone.

Unions in theory are not bad and help out the worker, but in this country they usually do more harm then good and demand to much.

They breeched their contract. Why shouldn't they get fired?

You're right. They have done a lot good for the workers of this country, however, the only purpose they serve today is to extort, manipulate and intimidate. I seem to recall someone recently posting in another thread about the head of a teacher's union in MS was picking up illegal aliens in school buses and driving them to polling places and bringing mail in ballots to an old folks home that already had the Dem candidates checked. Tell me why a teacher's union official is doing something like that.

Unions are like the telegraph. They were once useful but now unnecessary. Should we have to continue to use them even though they have outlived their purpose?

The union got CREAMED in that strike. Way overplayed their hands.

That strike was a classic example of why unions blow arse. In the end, they gave away total job numbers in exchange for VERY modest income/benefit gains. Was the classic "I got mine" mentality that showed that the idea that only rich people are greedy is hilarious. They were offered an initial deal that actually added jobs and refused it.

Just because a thing once was good doesn't mean that it will be good in perpetuity.

Oh. And sorry, but your theory that our workers would be no better off than third world countries is absurd. I get your point, but unions are FAR from the only thing that drove American prosperity and that prosperity has had a substantial effect upon improving the lives of all Americans.

There were good kings in the history of the world. And, the fact is, there could be such a thing again.

Alas, that same power can yield immensely bad results too.

This is rather odd. It would seem that 230 pissed off people could cause some serious damage to the company while waiting to be fired.

Keyword there is History.. Vast majority of unions have outlived their usefulness.. Very few even truly care about the actual workers anymore
