This was brought up in our Men's Emmaus reunion group on Thursday. Our church elders aren't optimistic about the likelihood the church avoids a schism.

Not sure what day of the conference but one of the days is set to discuss exit strategies. Someone is going to leave. The African conferences have already threatened to leave if the One Church Plan is adopted. If they stay with the Traditional Model then the more liberal West and Pacific Northwest jurisdictions will likely leave. Someone is leaving though. I have been following the Wesley Covenant Association as that might be an outlet if they do in fact adopt the One Church Plan, which I believe they will do. I am getting tired of having to change my way of thinking for such a small minority. Let them leave if they want to do gay weddings or ordain openly practicing gays. I don't mind worshiping with them as I've known many. I just don't think they should be in leadership roles within the Church.

I don’t disagree with your stance to get on with it, but - as others have pointed out - UMC properties aren’t autonomous. Therefore, the conservative folks are likely the ones to be forced out.
Isn’t that what the gracious exit is for? If the UMC decides to remove the gay-restrictive language from the Book of Disciplines, and conservative churches want to leave, I thought they proposed the gracious exit so that those churches could keep pension/property.

One of the two major tenets of Protestantism (Sola Scriptura) is in direct contradiction to what Peter tells us in his epistle.

Is that your interpretation of these particular verses?

I will wait and see what they come up with if anything. God speed UMC.

I just don't see how you can have disagreements about this. There is simply no excuse to ordain LGBTQXYZABC clergy. No more then you would ordain a minister who was married yet shacking up with his side piece and bragging about it. Sin is sin. You don't ordain unrepentant sinners. It ain't that hard, Methodists.

I live in Mississippi and 5 churches have exited the conference already. Two large churches in the northern part of the state and were allowed to leave by paying one year's apportionment. Apparently, they held some pretty large debt and the conference didn't want that burden. One in Meridian, the DS basically told the majority wanting to leave had them hand over the keys to the property to the smaller group that stayed. In Louisville, two churches are meeting in the same building. Currently, waiting on a court to decide who gets the building; the older group that left (pastor denounced his membership in the Methodist Conference) or the small group that stayed. Bellwether in Jackson left for different reasons but I have not heard how that property was handled.

This is true.
The march left is never satisfied.

The good thing about being Southern Baptist is that the local church is autonomous. If the SBC ever goes this route, we'll ignore it or withdraw.

Russell Moore and JD Greear would both like to take the SBC in this direction. Both have uaed SJW talking points on race, immigration and economics for some time.

All religion and religious dogma is a red herring that keeps you from finding true spirituality. It's a manmade hierarchy that takes religious symbolism and metaphor literally.

Good synopsis. Madison UMC has sizable debt on their property and they seem to be prepared to leave by offering the debt to the general conference. They are likely to get the same deal that the Orchard in Tupelo got. Pay a year of apportionment and do your own thing.

Towards letting gays serve as preachers? Have you lost your mind?

Of course, 20 years ago, many Methodists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians said the same thing as me.
