In terms of the film industry, the only positives I can think of are the benefits. Otherwise, I know people who have paid their dues, busted their arse to get sponsored in and haven't worked in well over a year. The cons outweigh the pros by a long shot and the fact that they don't help members find employment is one of my biggest gripes.
Plus if you worked your arse off as a production assistant barely making $150 a day for 600 days, qualified to join the director's guild, paid your dues and passed all the necessary tests, became a second AD making an ungodly amount but was forced to move to another state for whatever reason, you essentially have to start all over again which is bullshite. In other words, you are demoted to a production assistant and forced to work 180 days (I believe) before you can qualify as an AD again.

Because pay should be merit based, not collective based.

Unions have become nothing more than a pyramid scheme. They increase costs, and are one of the primary causes of the loss of manufacturing jobs in the us and the primary cause of the financial issues the Auto industry suffered. Ridiculous pension schemes that paid a guy who's job could have been done by a robot or a monkey $40/hour and then $100k/ year in retirement (which happened at age 50). Meanwhile if you are at the bottom of the union you are expected to strike when told, and your job is nothing but a bargaining chip to trade away for concessions benefiting the higher ups. Their time has passed, the worker protections we needed have all been codified into law, unions just cause waste and political corruption, and cost jobs

Unions have become corrupt, self-serving entities that protect themselves at the expense of workers. While I'm not philosophically opposed to workers joining together to improve their lot, this *MUST* be voluntary and forced unionism must be ended. The end result will be that unions will become more responsive to the demands of its membership and more true to their original mission...which is good for everyone (except for corrupt union officers who would prefer that their income stream be independent of their actions in office or how they treat their members).

That chart is misleading. It is not saying that incomes have decreased for middle class. It shows that the wealth has grown for upper and upper middle class people. Do you think that someone who owns a company, and has risked much to start said company, should benefit at the same rate as the worker that he has provided a livelihood to?

These statistics were taken during the 2000 census. I’m sure it has changed now that people are working with IBB Union.
This is in a county that has less than 10,000 people and around 22% of those are below the poverty line. There is 1 small grocery store, four small schools(without football teams), and no industry or hospital.
In one small town with less than 300 people there are 4 churches. That does not include the small churches in the rural areas’s in the school district. A Bible Belt county that will never vote democrat.

Take teachers unions. They are bad because they protect the worse teachers while paying more valuable teachers less than their market value

Understood. I just don't understand how a poor county can be solidly red.
This would mean Republicans win the poorest red areas and richest red areas. I'm just trying find the common ground.

I have no issues with unions. However, a worker should have the option to join one, not HAVE to join one to work.
Government worker unions need to be banned constitutionally

At my place of employment, the union workers are paid high wages and are lazy as shite. Solely because they know it’s an act of congress to fire them.

You just aren't very smart if you don't believe an art or music teacher is as important at a school as a math teacher is. The reality is we don't place ENOUGH emphasis on art and music.
Regardless if they are important or not it is a question of supply, teacher education programs crank out a dozen or more art and music teachers for every one math teacher. A person that has the necessary mathematics aptitude to do the course work required to be a math teacher could do just as well majoring in engineering so most do. Those with a aptitude for music and the arts have few other options for a job other than teaching that will provide a livable income after graduation.

Unions are parasitic organizations that eventually kill their host.

I don't dislike them. I don't like the government union employees, but the construction industry unions do a lot good for all. It helps non union workers wages for sure. I think the corruption is all but gone now. I used to be a crane operator and see both sides. Believe me building and trade unions help not just their members, but all workers. They fought for higher prevailing wage laws and have succeeded thru the years with raising the prevailing wages.

i have a friend who works for basf. they are currently in negotiations with the plant workers. they offered the plant workers everything they wanted with bonuses. the workers want to sign now but the union bosses won't take it because they want to appear that they are doing something and are needed. they'll make negotiations go on until the last minute. consequently, all of the office staff had to be cross trained on how to run the plant in the event of a strike. it sounds absurd.

Hard to prove that proposition directly.
