If this is true, i could at least rational it. One of the hardest schools to get in to has a weed out year. Separate the math wizards from the drop outs with less pressure of getting and A or a B for the students that can cut it. Once the weed out year happens real grades ensue for the next three years.
That is completely different than a state university with 60K (or however many) students not having grades at all

How about all schools (and businesses) go to straight meritocracy and remove all demographic info (race, gender, age) from the acceptance (or hiring) process?
The left would never accept straight meritocracy because most of their pet projects can't compete without special consideration.
