Had never thought of it this way but probably very true. We've all wanted a piece of Turkey since humans started treading ground there. It's the crossroads of Europe and Asia, east and west, and the straits are a very valuable strategic piece of land and water.

Also it was once a terrific empire and I'm sure they're not thrilled to be scaled back and subservient for the last 100 years to US and USSR.

Put those two facts together and it's easy to see why their politics are complex.
