Trump’s tariffs might actually be working as he intended

I haven't seen this commented on yet. Some excerpts below.
NY Post Editorial
NY Post Editorial
quote:
It was, by any measure, a lot of red ink. When Volkswagen announced its third-quarter profits at the end of October, the German auto giant said it anticipated heavy losses for this year. The reason? It is taking a 5 billion-euro hit from tariffs imposed in the American market.
Likewise, the German sportswear manufacturer Adidas warned of a 120 million-euro hit to its earnings, in part because the levies its sneakers now face in the United States, while Toyota warned of a $9 billion hit from tariffs.
For anyone following the corporate earnings season over the last month, a clear theme has emerged from the giants of European and Asian industry: President Trump’s tariff regime is starting to significantly reduce their profits.
But hold on. Weren’t we told that tariffs would simply be passed straight on to American consumers in the form of higher prices? That they were a tax on ordinary working people?
Instead, it is already becoming clear that at least some of the costs are being paid by foreign conglomerates and even by foreign governments.
quote:
Yes, the tariffs are a tax. But they are a tax that’s being paid primarily by foreign companies and foreign governments, not by the American consumers we were all supposed to be weeping for. And that changes everything.
quote:
So what’s actually happening? Where is the money going? The answer reveals three fascinating dynamics that the economic orthodoxy, as it so often does, failed to anticipate.
quote:
According to the Harvard’s Pricing Lab, prices of imported goods rose by 5.4% from March to September as tariffs were imposed, compared with 3% for domestic goods, so some of the tariffs were passed on but far from the full cost. In other words, the market has adjusted, just not in the way the textbooks predicted.
quote:
Finally, and perhaps most encouraging for those who believe in American dynamism, is the entrepreneurial response. Tariffs create opportunities and American business owners have already shown signs that they will prove remarkably adept at seizing them.

What is causing those profit losses?

Did you read beyond the first short paragraph? Actually it was stated in the very first paragraph.
They are absorbing the costs of the tariffs instead of passing the full costs on to the consumer.

Yes! And how can those companies avoid taking those losses from tariff’s?
By building in the US.

And they have cut shifts at their plant in Chattanooga, laid off salaried employees and also furloughed 200 people.
So yes, tariffs are “working”

Many products are sold at high margins in America. This gives most companies a buffer from tariffs already.
However, to maintain profits they need to retain the price. If they raise the price based on the tariffs, they’ll price out their consumer.

So instead of a charging $100 for a pair of shoes that costs $10 to make in China +$80 in tariffs, they can charge $100 for a pair of shoes that costs $90 to make in Ville Platte with no tariffs. Brilliant

The Trump cult loves when business makes a smaller profit due to government pulling the taxing levers

How would anybody know what he intended? They've been all over the place with that.

In your scenario, the price the consumer pays is the same, and the company invested $ in the US and hired American workers and absorbed all the costs. That sounds like a deal any American would take all day long.

I'm mocking the idea that a company would move their manufacturing here for the same outcome. Why would they build a factory here when next week the tariffs could be gone?

OMB! Is your answer I’m sure
Posted on 11/26/25 at 9:21 am to Nevada_Tiger
the midterms are going to be a bloodbath if you're delusional enough to think the consumers arent feeling the tariff hit. true or not, they will blame price increase on that and inflation

Why would they do that on products that will not be tariffed one cent?
Oh wait

Lulz, tariffs

This is why the left fears them.

IDGAF what government does to foreign businesses. But keep your chanting from your cult that your opposition is a cult.

Gotcha, so a hypothetical with exaggerated outcomes.
What about a scenario closer to reality that is still a net benefit to the US?

I think there is still time for the policy to show value to the voters. The rest is messaging and politics.

It is too early to tell. These tariffs are only seven months old.
At the end of the day, prices will go up. Margins will be maintained. That is what has happened in history.
