WASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court revived on Friday an expanded immigration database that President Donald Trump’s administration said aims to combat voting by noncitizens but critics contend could disenfranchise eligible voters.
The justices granted the Justice Department’s request to block a judge’s order that had stopped state officials from using Social Security numbers and other information to conduct sweeping checks of the citizenship status of registered voters against federal records.
The administration’s data-sharing arrangement is one in a series of actions boosting the federal government’s involvement in voting ahead of November’s midterm elections in which Trump’s fellow Republicans seek to maintain control of Congress. The U.S. Constitution gives individual states the primary authority to run and administer elections.

The privacy act of 1974 permits the use of PII for law enforcement purposes, which can be anything the federal government wants it to be.

Can someone please explain to me how the government knowing your SSN to check your citizenship status is disenfranchising when it’s the government that gives you that number?
That’s rhetorical of course; I know these people are full of shite. I don’t like the government as much as the next person, but this is just a dumb argument.

I laughed at this as well. And the other ruling, the IRS cannot share information with DHS. Thats akin to telling a company finance is not allowed to audit their sales department or look at any of their info. What kind of asinine ruling is that?
At some point the executive branch needs to just ignore the lower courts and continue to proceed, let the supreme court tell them to stop. Same with all these nationwide TROs, let the supreme court handle it, until then proceed as usual. Eventually the supreme court will have to address nationwide TROs or it will be all they deal with and their docet will be filled for years.

The 3 dissenters on this case were the usual suspects. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Since they are against government databases right now.... It might be a great time for SCOTUS to review those illegal databases that ATF and FBI have of gun owner records.
