The point is to get people to buy products that are made in America.
American manufacturers couldn't compete with the cheap shite being made overseas because manufacturers in places like China and India because overseas manufacturers can get away with paying poverty wages, no health insurance, no pensions, no paid maternity/paternity leave, no other fringe benefits, and far less government regulatory stuff to deal with.
Tariffs are just leveling the playing field for American made goods and giving US companies a reason to move at least some of their manufacturing back stateside.

By raising prices, correct?

So the tariff is paid in this country by the importer
As has been said...99% of the time by an associate of the country of export.
Have you seen prices shoot through the roof?
Yeah...me neither.

When someone rightly points out the 2006 Auburn-LSU officiating abomination likely cost LSU a national title, do you respond, we finished as the number three team in the country ... You people have lost your minds listening to influencers/grifters?
A card phenom joins a world championship poker tourney, and when it wraps up, he's finished second to someone who cheated. When he complains, do you tell him "You are the number two player in the world, and albeit for the cheating, you'd be ahead of the number one. You have lost your mind listening to influencers/grifters"?

We havent abdicated our mfg position, we elevated it which benefitted workers more than bringing back assembly line work.

The point is a good one. Trump is taxing the hell out of us and bragging about billions of dollars of new taxes flowing into the treasury. That money comes from us.
BUY AMERICAN dumass.

You do know we're the #2 manufacturing country by total volume with a very high per capita output, right?
And we export a ton of tech and services (high margin, expensive items)?
Our economy is more than lower-level manufacturing, ag, and Wall Street.
And a ton of agricultural. California's agricultural output is staggering.

Well at least we are able to pay down half a billion on the ND every year. Sooner or later, we, the people were going to have to do that anyway. Consider this patriotic. If and when the democrats return to power they will use this money for their social justice priorities.

Is this happening? I'd think there would be reports showing this. Thanks.
Not claims but something like a ledger showing it is happening. If we're being asked to share in the pain we should also be able to see the reward.
And why just a half a billion a year is billions are alledgedly pouring in every month?

So we drive up the cost of doing business here with benefits and regulations and then when other countries don't follow suit the solution is to make their products more expensive with tariffs so that the American consumer is given no choice but to buy goods at a higher cost?

And where is that line of the wage that should be paid here? 95% of this board hates unions, but then people pushing for tariffs to get jobs back here starts to sound a lot like livable wage union talk.

Unions and tariffs go hand in hand imo.. The protectionism displayed with tariffs stifles innovation and reform.

“Well, the check is written to the person who receives it at the dock, in the U.S.” Bessent replied.
“The check is written by the person, the receiver. So the tariff is paid in this country by the importer. Is that right?” Robinson pressed. Bessent then said that the exporter could lower their price to retain market share. Robinson pressed again: “But the check is written by the importer, at the dock?
“Yep,” Bessent said. “And the importer can pass it on or not.”
Bessent should have made that frick sit through an explanation of incoterms and recognize that 100% there are many cases were goods are imported under 'D' terms where the supplier in the export country is footing the bill.
You wanna try and get technical? Let's fricking get technical.

Thats not always true, and it's not true often enough that it's not just a technicality

What a stupid point you're trying to make. The importer of record can be the Brazilian company's local affiliate. Not following you, the importers local affiliate (which is a USA business) pays it, and passes it on to their purchasers.
This moron reporter who was asking the question was trying to say Americans directly "cut the check"
Which is stupid.

Then its just another tax. If you like taxes, then you should love tariffs. I supposed its too much to ask a Republican administration to focus on cuts instead of "tax and spend." Thats what liberals do.
I don’t disagree, spending should be cut. Nevertheless, our country is trillions in debt and other countries and foreign businesses are profiting from their access to our markets and consumers. I’d rather tax some foreign profits than American income/profits.
As we’re seeing, if that taxing of foreign profits isn’t causing much effect on the prices Americans are seeing, what’s the downside for Americans?
