I understand your point, however I think there is a difference in this case:
Trump's intervention is using politics to make sports happen.
The player kneeling/boycott issue is using sports to make politics happen.
I think this distinction explains why sports fans who don't want "politics" involved won't be upset about Trump's involvement.

Plus he's just doing an interview on a radio show. He's not making a political statement in a stadium at the beginning of a game
