Did you work in that industry before? What part of a coal fired boiler wears out that ends it’s lifecycle?

In the 1980s I was marketing director for a national demolition and dismantling company. We sought power plants which were 40-50 years ol. There was still a market to sell the used steam turbine generators overseas. Things wear out and can be repaired until repair costs become too high. From what I've seen it's the tubes which need to be replaced. It depends how many at a time. The mud drum and steam drum are rarely the problem with old boilers

This plan includes a $700 Million investment in coal fired plants and mines. That will help. TVA alone has projected spending $2 Billion on Coal Ash alone over the next 4 years.

I guess that makes sense, after spending $1.78 Billion on a single coal ash spill (5.4 million cubic yards) in Kingston, TN. It only took 6 years and 6.7 Million man-hours to clean it up. For reference, that would fill LSU Tiger Stadium from the field to the top, twice...or overflow the the Super Dome (right at 4.6 Million Cubic Yards).

Kingston Coal Ash Spill

The US is the world's largest supplier of Natural Gas. Combined-cycle or gas boiler conversion of coal-fired plants is practical, and makes a much better solution for long term operation. We need to convert more plants to gas (over 100 have already done so), then start working on getting the grid shored up with small modular nuclear reactors.

Coal is no longer economical.
Most of them are losing money. That’s why they need government help.

Mud/Steam drums are mainly package boilers. Paper mills mainly but these units produce mainly wet steam. Dry steam is a totally different beast.

When you get into the high megawatt boilers like Cumberland City Tennessee that’s 1650Mw I believe, they don’t have mud/steam drums they have wet bottoms. These boilers are massive in size. Most common boilers start at 650mw and up.

This is great news. I was hoping Trump would close Harvard down and piecemeal sell the property and confiscate its foundation money to pay for coal plants, but this is close enough.

Totally understand, but why do we need the Defense Production Act invoked? Central economic planning is socialism and not a good idea

I have had the good fortune to have similar experiences as you with nuclear and coal fired power plants. Finally someone, you, speak the truth to the truly uninformed.

Good job.

I have never worked on boilers but field erected boilers demolished in the 1980's had mud and steam drums.

Coal ash is desired to solidify sludge to be disposed of in a landfill. The ash is mixed into it so it can pass a paint filter test required.

FWIW, Clean Coal means wet scrubbing the flue gas to remove particulates and gases like CO2. The CO2 is then injected into a CCS site.
