And this is why nobody respects your opinion.

Tariffs and taxes have different names for a reason.

Instead of being precise and factual, Gnome decided to go a more broad route for political reasons.

yeah, the same reason that payroll taxes and sales taxes have different names

and this sudden concern for precise language in the age of trump is just precious

those are perfectly synonymous though

are you implying, as the rest are, that the existence of the word "tariff" somehow implies that a tariff is not a tax?

Please ban yourself. You are dumb or naive if you think by saying "Trump prepared to raise taxes" doesn't make most people think income tax. Yes, a tariff is a tax, but why not be specific?

He's saying using the term tax in the way the OP did was intentionally misleading.

Good heavens "you people".

This board knows what a tax and a tariff is. Gnome specifically went with the word tax in a troll attempt.

If he went with
"Trump said he's prepared to raise tariffs as trade war with China heats up"
this thread would be off the front page in around 5 minutes.

Going with tax is troll agenda stuff

This is the headline from the article
"Trump says he's 'ready' to put tariffs on all $505 billion of Chinese goods imported to the US"

I guess we will let Elton send us out

I keep assuming that poster is just being intentionally obtuse, but it happens so often, I think he may just be dumb.

I'm asserting exactly what everyone else is.

they are indeed technically synonymous, so why not use the more widely accepted used term?

because using "tax" is inflammatory and also is wide open to interpretation. using your own example of sales tax and income tax, the "tax" in the title isn't even specified. He just said "tax".

this betrays his intent and shows his thread was not made in good faith, he just wants to piss people off.

i see them described as import taxes as often as not, and it never bothers me. this is what it is and a more mechanical description

looking at it in light of this thread, "tariff" appears to function as a bit of a euphemism more than i realized, given how upset it has you all

tax, modified by the transaction being taxed, is a more precise description. and an unpopular one here

i'm glad op has brought this to light

Did you decide to go purchase something? Because the government decides for you to pay taxes, not for you to go purchase something.

You are such a moron it is outstanding.

Tariffs are "taxes" the you volunteer (by choosing for yourself whether to buy or not) to pay when buying something

Taxes are mandatory payments from you to the government, decided for you by sad government, outside of your control.

You don't have to buy the merchandise. You do have to pay taxes.

I swear to god I could teach this to a monkey in a zoo faster than it's taking you to grasp it.

lol just lol at the crying about trolling, imprecise language, and inflammatory language

"import tax" is a neutral and more precise descriptor

the fact that it's a tax by definition is what really is causing all the panty-twisting
