Speaking to The Washington Examiner, Trump wonders why issues "could not have been worked out" in order to prevent the bloody conflict. Trump praises the accomplishments of Jackson, the populist president he has cited as a role model. He makes the puzzling claim that Jackson "was really angry that he saw what was happening in regard to the Civil War." But Jackson died in 1845, and the Civil War didn't begin until 16 years later, in 1861.

Clearly all they were missing was a copy of The Art of the Deal.

Yeah it was a huge surprise that the country broke out in civil war. Happened overnight. No way a president could have seen these issues on the horizon.

Nullification Crisis actually occurred during Jackson's term. You really would have had your head deep in the sand to not have seen the Civil War coming.

South Carolina jumped the gun. Lincoln wanted to invade but there was little will in the North for an invasion until they handed it to him.

fricking Spurrier.

It's almost as if today mainstream media didn't have their head on the sand about Hillary winning.

There's many reasons why trump is so popular with the proudly stupid.

That is precisely why Abraham Lincoln is the worst president in U.S. history. A truly great president would have avoided the death of 620,000 American lives. Slavery would have died on its own accord especially because of technology and morality...like it did in every other western and South American country.

I guess he was a little confused.

Just like Pearl Harbor.

The U.S. was fairly pacifist until that, and even then they didn't declare on Germany right away.

A fairly administered literacy test would give Republicans a permanent majority including CA and put NY in play.

What a fricking weird statement for Trump to
make.

I mean it isn't really wrong, just strange.

No, the current system encourages the illiterate to vote. That doesn't make it wise. Or sustainable.

Oh, here's an easily found quote from Jackson. Maybe he actually did see it coming. But NO. that couldn't be, because Trump is an imbecile and just talking out of his arse.

I agree.

I misunderstood your statement initially. I thought you meant the literacy of the candidates (not the electorate).

This. Too bad we didn't then have the Civil War as slavery would have definitely not been the issue.

By the time Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated, peace was a lost cause.

How many states had left the Union by March 1861? 7 I think?

Why not go after James Buchanan?

Like a lot of his statements, it's just so vague it's hard to discern the point he's trying to make. Sure, Jackson curbed the nullification crisis, which was probably the advent of what lead to the Civil War, but there's no way Jackson could have been angry about the Civil War. He was angry over the nullification efforts of South Carolina though, and especially hated John Calhoun.
