Trump made an interesting point about our GDP and NATO

Of course in his presser this morning he said it was time for everyone to pay their fair share. However, he brought up the point of with our economy rising and our GDP getting better, that means we will be paying even more into NATO.
I hadn't thought about that. I got the feeling he was insinuating that "what are we going to get in return for even more money that we are paying in?"
That makes sense. Say our GDP is heads above other countries. Seems to me we will even be a bigger contributor yet we will be getting the same results as we have been getting. NATO is using the U.S. as the banker to finance their country's defenses. That doesn't set really well with me.
We need to remember, this is not the government's money that we are sending over there to keep NATO's balloon inflated - it is your hard-earned tax money going to them.
Maybe it's time to rework this "formula" of fairness concerning contributions to NATO.

And it's continuing to grow. But a loaf of bread is the same price for everybody. You shouldn't have to pay more for it today just because you got a raise yesterday. I think that is what he was saying.

We aren't obligated to put in more. We will always spend more than our 2% minimum because we have a large military presence. Why do you all keep saying contribute?

Which in the present time is growing because of our GDP but yet the services of NATO are remaining stagnant from what I see. We're not getting bangs for our bucks. One country should not be bearing the burden of financing at least 60% of NATO's budget and with our rising GDP I see us financing even more of that budget.

I say that until everyone ponies up their 2% we don't make another payment. If they want to throw us out then good luck to them the next time someone starts some shite. I am tired of financing the world when we have so many needs in our own country. The left keeps applauding the EU's ability to have universal healthcare and free college but they don't realize that is only because we support the EU financially. frick them.

This isn’t money we send to Brussels (NATO’s HQ). This is a commitment by member countries to spend the minimum of 2% of GDP on defense spending. The thought is you need to invest at least that much to have a military that can contribute to NATO.

Instead of wanting other Euro countries to pay more on defense, he should be talking about cutting our spending in half.

But assuming we are debating this in the light of today’s political reality in which we are committed to defending Europe from some hypothetical Russian attack...theoretically, wouldn’t the Europeans having the capability to defend themselves(or at least defend themselves better than they can now) allow us to not commit as much to the defense of Europe?

I don't think so, because the pressure to spend is coming from more than just NATO. there are numerous internal and external forces on the spending habits of the US, and we need a significant internal force to fight it.
Also, i think cutting our budget would be more likely to spur NATO budget increases than NATO increasing their would be to decrease ours.

Does everyone here realize that this means cutting our military spending by 40%?
This would reduce our federal budget by around $300 billion, which would be nice, but I’m not sure everyone understands the implications.

Ahh. Misunderstood how that worked. Thanks. Half my point still stands. Give them a deadline for everyone to reach 2% or we walk. I hate supporting people that hate us.

The overall amount does, but not the percentage. My question is why is the United States contributing nearly 4% to NATO instead of the agreed upon 2%? Is it to cover the scofflaws?
