Trump lies again about having no control over immigration policy

In fact, there is no law that requires families to be separated at the border. There is a law against “improper entry” at the border, as well as a consent decree known as the Flores settlement that limits to 20 days the amount of time that migrant children may be held in immigration detention, which a federal judge ruled in 2016 also applies to families. A 2008 anti-trafficking statute — signed into law by a Republican president, George W. Bush — also requires that certain unaccompanied alien minors be transferred out of immigration detention in 72 hours. None of those laws or precedents mean that children must be taken away from their parents.
It is the Trump administration’s decision this year to prosecute all unlawful immigrants as criminals that has forced the breakup of families; the children are removed when the parents are taken into federal custody. While previous administrations have made exceptions to such prosecutions for adults traveling with their minor children, the Trump administration has said it will not do so.
quote:
Any notion that this bill ends family separation is a boldfaced lie,” said Representative Bennie G. Thompson of Mississippi, the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee. “The Trump administration is brutally separating families at the border because they choose to as a deterrent.”

NYT opinion piece.
What was Obama's reasoning for caging up kids? Surely he had some precedent to go by or was it just another one of his EOs?

I have a solution. Don't bring your kids when you are going to break the law

But muh illegal immigrants.

Do you know how many of these children being detained actually come with their families? Because it’s fairly common for juveniles to be used by cartels in drug smuggling operations. Maybe this never occurred to you but the reality is that not all of these kids are on a trip with ma and pa.

If I said hey. TJ, if you try to cross this line, I’ll shoot you.
Are you gonna act surprised when you get shot for crossing that line?
If you didn’t wanna get shot, wouldn’t you say ok, I’ll just stay on this side of the line?
Don’t wanna have your kid taken from you? Don’t fricking cross the boarder with your kid.
Easy as frick

Sounds like the author is suggesting that we should let any illegal who hauls a kid over the line, whether it’s his or not (because there’s no way for us to know, they aren’t traveling with birth certificates and ID), to escape criminal prosecution so he can keep the kid he picked up along the way with him.

So by following the law, laws which are enacted by Congress, somehow it is this POTUS that is responsible?
That the kids in the cages in 2014, 2015 are somehow POTUS Trump's doing?

You could argue that Trump’s policy of criminal prosecuting EVERY illegal, whether they bring a kid or not, actually protects children from trafficking. Otherwise, there is a perverse incentive for illegals to “buy” a kid to accompany him across the border to prevent his prosecution. If there is a demand to “buy” children for that purpose, you can bet there will be a market to provide them, supported by kidnappings and the like.
