Is this an admission that the tariff plan isn’t working since the point of the tariffs was to get other countries to cut or eliminate the tariffs on our stuff and we cut or eliminate tariffs on their stuff.

In my lifetime I've heard dozens of similar promises- "with the revenue this [new tax] will generate we'll be able to afford this[wonderful thing]." The problem is, the government never saves money. It just 're-appropriates' it and throws down a different black hole.

The problem is as structural as it is financial.

Absolutely not. We will get other countries to zero tariffs, while OUR tariffs bring manufacturing home and generate sufficient revenue to eliminate income taxes.

BUT, that will ONLY happen after the market sufficiently crashes to allow us to “refinance” our debt at zero percent interest.

You’re just not smart enough to understand these things.

We MUST address the insane deficit spending by Congress and doing this first would be to go backwards on that.

Have you not been paying attention to a thing called DOGE? Have you been hiding under a rock and wondering why all of the sudden the democrats hate Elon’s guts?

Wait till they pass this “big, beautiful bill.” I guarantee you there won’t be a single spending cut.

If you completely eliminate the taxpayer money that was distributed by USAID to all of the stupid shite that it went to, yeah, taxes could be significantly reduced.

You are correct. However we have a spending problem not a lack of revenue problem. If we raised taxes today to match spending we would need to raise them again next year as spending is growing faster then GDP and thus revenue.

We need to greatly reduce government, target fraud in the entitlement programs, and institute a balanced budget amendment.

I've been watching DOGE. Have you? If so, you should know their official website shows only a savings of $160B. While that's a nice start, it's nowhere near the ~$2T needed to cancel out the deficit and begin paying the debt down even a small amount annually.

Also, look at the " big, beautiful bill". It cuts spending by only $200B per year for the next 10 years (average). That combined with the current DOGE recommendations puts us at $360B. FY2025's estimated deficit is ~$1.9T, meaning that at the least we still need to see ~5x cuts just to balance the budget, much less start paying down the debt.

Conservatives: I'm a small government conservative.

Trump: I'm going to try to eliminate taxes for people making less than $200k.

Also conservatives: Noooooo! That's unfair! I constantly bitch about low birthrates and high taxes, and this will help with that, but someone gets an advantage I don't (as if most people here even sniff $200k), so waaaahhhh.

Some people would rather pay more in taxes than pay less if it meant someone else would pay even less than them. They are willing to cut off their nose to spite their face.

This is also just a first step. The goal is no income taxes, but the whiners will not allow that in steps. If it doesn't happen 100% immediately, then it must not happen at all. They spent decades building the deep state, but if we can't destroy it in one fell swoop, then we shouldn't do anything at all.

If certain people got their way, nothing would ever change. They constantly let perfect be the enemy of good.

There's a lot of whiny people on the right. Trump is telling you what he wants to ideally achieve, and many are melting. They admit the current system is fricked but then shite over anyone who tries to change things unless it is done exactly how they want and in the order they want.

Too many people have tunnel vision. The Epstein files haven't been released, so nothing the DOJ does will ever be good enough.

Trump is working on reducing spending. He's already told us this. But until it happens, people will crap all over every good thing that happens.

Trump is trying to lower taxes, and "small government" conservatives are bitching. Do you want a strong country or do you just want the government to only do things that personally benefit you?

Most people are the latter. They're not willing to give up even a little of themselves for the good of the country. No wonder this country is falling apart. People only care about themselves.

Most of the complainers also happily take tax breaks others don't get, but that's different, I guess.

Unless you elinimate it all together, you are adding to the already stomach turning wealth redistribution by taking from the haves and handing it to the have nots.

So much cognitive dissonance, the cultists seriously believe this will happen.
