Senator sasse understands

Sen. @BenSasse (R-Neb.) on the Trump Tariff: "Here's something Rs used to understand: Tariffs are taxes on families. Moms & dads shopping on a budget for a new washing machine will pay for this, not big companies. You don't fix 8 years of bad energy policy with bad trade policy."

For you people who claim this helps jobs here: what about the jobs that will be lost because families buying appliances will have less disposable income due to higher prices? Every extra dollar they are forced to spend on a washing machine is a dollar they cannot spend buying a microwave or a grill for their backyard

That costs us jobs

This is a crappy policy decision you'd expect from new deal era democrat

BTW- the american south historically has been harmed very badly by tariffs

Southern farmers were forced to buy higher priced farming equipment from northern firms than from cheaper British suppliers

Maybe you guys should remember what your ancestors stood for: they hated tariffs

It's not an optimal move. Trump's overall policies and tenure in the WH have also been the most conservative of any president since Reagan. You have to take the good with the bad.

Fortunately, corporate tax rates were just slashed bigly and companies can now afford to produce here in the states, resulting in the creation of many high paying jobs for all Americans!

I agree. I voted for Trump but he wasn't my 1st or 2nd choice. I'm not a fan of protectionism. Ultimately we are the ones that pay.

As soon as we repeal FLSA, Taft-Harltey, and OSHA (or impose these standards in every other competing country), and also get rid of administrative regulations impacting our ability to manufacture here, we can look at a free market solution to this particular problem.

What you don't understand is there is no such thing as a free market when China is involved because they make markets with their centralized economic directives

Here's some light reading on the background of Trump's decision.

The U.S. International Trade Commission finds that surging imports of large residential washing machines harmed domestic producers

And here's an article on why we have anti dumping laws, in case you've never taken an economics class. LINK

I don't like it.

But it really only affect high end manufacturers. It really isn't going to affect China much at all.

And for the consumer, the tariff is cut almost in half by the 30% federal rebate.

Plus the tariff reduces each year.

Wait, that doesn't make sense. The party of Lincoln was tariff imposer in chief. Agreeing with tariff imposition is historically consistent.

A) It's a negotiating tactic by Trump and you're not looking at the bigger picture. This is the opening salvo, not the end decision.

B) Trump has to keep some promises along these lines to blue collar / manufacturing workers in Rust Belt states. These are the very people who elected him. So far he's given them TPP cancelation, Paris Accord withdrawal*, and some tough talk / tariffs against competing foreign countries.

There are a lot of swing state Senate seats up for grabs in 10 months. This is smart politics by Trump. By the way, none of these things are irreversible. It's just good politics.

I have been against Trump on the tariff issue from day one.

I'm not saying that tariffs are 100% off limits. But, in general, against them.

Now, I suppose as a negotiating tactic, they might serve some purpose.

So, guess we'll see.

I'm not a big fan of tariffs in general, but I do find it funny how the solar industry now wants to moan and groan about government intervention. Their existence in this country is off the backs of government incentives.
