Trump has some very left wing trade policy views. No surprise that the only time Peter Navarro ran for office was as a Democrat.

When Trump chose his cabinet, the picks I really hated were Ross, Lighthizer, and Navarro.

What Sasse seems to not grasp is this will not be a permanent situation. Likely to last a few weeks or less.

What is long lasting is to continue to allow China to unfairly tax our goods while we continue to do nothing. The result is we sell less stuff to China and it costs jobs here in the US. Not sure this pussy Sasse understands what the problem is right now. He seems as fricking stupid as Pelosi.

The basic problem we have in government these days is none of them seem to understand fair trade. This is a huge problem folks.

It is currently set up to last several years, with the tariff reducing after each year

Another thread where the free market zealots criticize the president for enforcing our free trade deals.

For you people who claim this helps jobs here: what about the jobs that will be lost because families buying appliances will have less disposable income due to higher prices?

Do Toyotas built here have higher sticker prices?
Do BMWs?

Would you be better off with a BMW built in Germany and sold here at the same price as one which could have been built by American workers in Spartanburg?

This is about manufacturing location. It is identical in premise to what many of our international competitors do to US exports.

I don't know all of details of the tariff, but with regards to the washing machines, its all probably overblown in the press.

Large appliances to be sold in the US are in the long run going to be made in either the US or Mexico.

At the end of the day, they're all essentially empty boxes. That low density means that trans-pacific shipping costs overwhelm the lower labor costs.

Hell, a Chinese manufacturer, Haier, even makes full size fridges in the US.

BTW- the american south historically has been harmed very badly by tariffs

Southern farmers were forced to buy higher priced farming equipment from northern firms than from cheaper British suppliers

Maybe you guys should remember what your ancestors stood for: they hated tariffs

So because certain tariffs at one time over 100 years ago negatively impacted people who lived in the region I currently live, I should therefore view this tariff as bad?

There's an ideological argument to be made against tariffs. This is not a good one.

Also, my "ancestors" in the South stood for a lot of things. Should we extrapolate that logic?

Where did Republicans stand on tariffs back in those times? Since I'm also a Republican, should I be for them then? Or does my Southern heritage trump my affiliation with the Republican Party position from over 100 years ago? Or maybe it's a stupid way to make a persuasive argument...

you have to pick your battles.

Reagan did the same thing when he saved Harley Davidson

ETA: Btw that is meant for the press not yelling at yall I just think he has earned the right to do things his way, if it is bad for the people, I believe he will change it.

True in both cases of illegals and washing machines.

The free market ends at a nation's borders. Beyond that is only national security and national interest.

Governing as if it’s a free market, when it isn’t is not helpful.
