I share the president's sentiments, but this was a dumb move politically. Hispanics are tribal (sorry, but it's true) and this won't go over well, even with legal immigrants

BUT, every legal immigrant probably has a cousin, or an uncle, whatever, who is in the country illegally. Or he knows people from back home (Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc) who is here illegally and a swipe at them can be perceived as a swipe at their homeland.
Case in point, a friend of mine legally immigrated here from Argentina about 20 years ago. He is a conservative and a registered Republican. But he voted against Trump last time and is voting for Biden this time because of Trump's talk about illegal immigrants. Like I said, tribal. And extremely sensitive about their patria .

Hispanics are very diverse and come from many places. They are not as tribal as you think.
Also, the ones who immigrated legally have no love for the others.

I lived in South America for 6 years, and in Los Angeles for 27 years. I know Hispanics and I'm telling you that Trump is misjudging their character; their forma de ser. At a time when Trump needs Hispanic votes, this move is ill-timed
