All the protesting was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

The out of control penalties, Thursday night football, taking big hits out of the game, changing how receivers can be guarded, QB head touching rule, etc.. Have been slowly watering down the product and fanbase.

You combine that with the shift in ESPN from just covering sports and highlights to nonstop political coverage and nonsense off the field and lockeroom antics reporting and its been a long time coming.

It really is a shame. Growing up me and my dad would watch almost every NFL game. Now a days I just watch the Saints and then call it a day. I miss the NFL and I miss ESPN just showing highlights and breaking down offenses and discussing team and player differences.

They don't exactly need to.

This was the most watched sporting event since the Super Bowl last year.

The NFC champs passed 2 years and last years Super Bowl champ?

How much better of a matchup could you ask for?

I agree, although it's relevant to keep the perspective that the NFL was/is practically printing money and was in pretty unprecedented territory of popularity (for anything, not just sports) before the slide began.

So they obviously have a long way to go before they're in genuine trouble.

wtf are you talking about? I watch football every single week and there are considerably more hours of football than politics, while watching football.

So you think a year over year over year decline doesn’t mean anything. Got it.

You can't be this ignorant.

What do things do once they've gone so far up they can no longer sustain such a climb? They go down.

It started well before kneeling, and it wouldn't have stopped if there were no kneeling.

You realize that this started way before the kneeling, right.

The year before the kneeling saw record viewership. Sorry to melt that snowflake of yours

The NFL is insanely popular on TV - Nov 2015

The top 12 shows of the 2015 fall season have all been NFL games, led by the 29.4 million viewers who tuned in for the Seattle-Dallas game on Nov. 1. In all, 26 of the top 27 programs were professional football games, with only the first Republican primary debate interrupting the dominance with an appearance at No. 13.

For some of us, there is so much vitriol and pandering and general bullshite in the world and sometimes we just want a break. It is exhausting.

I do not want to be reminded before or during every game of the world outside of football on Sundays. As soon as they start grandstanding and all that nonsense it just makes me turn the TV off and do something else. Football was my escape growing up. When they start ruining that escape I will find something we else to watch or do.

If it does not bother you, great, to each their own, but for a few of us it is just too much.

Yeah but where can you find anything that is politics-free now?

I'm not questioning your position, I just find it's infiltrated almost everything.

What about when the NFL does breast cancer awareness?

Or prior to this when they'd honor Pat Tillman?

Did any of that bother you? If not, you may not be aggravated by what you're explaining.

The decline started in 2015. It’s well documented. If the phony “boycotts” affected viewership in any way, it wasn’t much. And most of those people still watch anyway. Viewership is declining because the product on the field is not what it once was. We’ve all been complaining for years about this. It’s common sense, dude.

The INCREASE in viewership decreased, however.

It was the last 2 NFC Superbowl representatives and first real NFL game of the year. It will only get worse from here.

I find it either in writing on my new project car, working on the houses I flip, or my hobbying with building machines and equipment.

Basically anything without a fricking screen

That doesn’t matter. There wasn’t much interest in that matchup. And Thursday Night football sucks and is not good for the league.
