Yes. Generally a RIF at a large corporation is accompanied with severance packages.

Except these weren't severance packages

They literally were just put on administrative leave until the resignation date had passed.

They still collected leave/sick leave, received biweekly paychecks.

My question is why wouldn't you, if I'm in a situation like that, unless I have a signed agreement that I'm not allowed to work, I dam sure will find work.

Because in many of these instances, if person in question finds employment, they no longer receive gov't check. Most people, right or wrong, will ride that until the wheels fall off.

Any federal employee who was good at what they did would be snapped up by the private sector.

This is what they planned for according to Elon's own words. This isn't really a gotcha but the dims view the sun rising as a gotcha.

Elon said this would likely happen.

Just because he said it would happen doesn’t mean it was a good strategy. Didn’t need to happen so fast.

Measure twice. Cut once.

And far far more US companies have added DEI over bloated HR programs filled with inept individuals who have ruined the companies and seen foreign companies fill the void.

So you think we have too many white women in the workplace?

This was expected. Elon talked about it.
Cut hard and deep, and any cuts made that were actually needed, hire em back.

So, whats the fricking problem?????

I ask out of ignorance, what fraction have been rehired?

I think the exact number was unknown by the reporter and probably will not be known until those who got the letter decide if they are going to return. CNN had reported that about 1K were fired (or about 8.6% of their workforce). CNN. The report just says "hundreds" of notices went out so that's a pretty broad range.

IIRC, HHS rehired about a third of their workforce in June from the DOGE layoffs.

I think the rehiring buries the lead a little bit. DOGE had targeted the immediate termination of about 800 leases at a proposed cost savings of about 406 MM. Before this event, about 460 were taken off the hit list and it brought the number down to 104 MM of savings. For the remaining leases, the government tenants are holding over. They were never notified by GSA of the termination notice. We don't yet know if the holdover rents or additional necessary renewals will cut into the 104MM number; until things are finalized, how much labor costs were saved; and the final net of both items.

Wrong. When dealing with a cancer, cutting more is better. It must be stopped.
