Because Mississippi what? You think the federal Department of Education has done anything for the state? They have increased student debt.... same as in other states.... by giving out student loans as fast as they can.

There is that Michelle Obama school lunch program tho! Cold wheat tortillas and a slice of turkey! Yummy!

I was a tutor for TRIO at a community college while studying for the bar. We were grossly overpaid for the amount of work we provided. While I did get to help a handful of students, the ROI for the government was abysmal.

But at least you were providing something. This particular program was providing "study sessions" but it was just study hall where kids studied on their own while an overpaid person made sure they didn't kill each other.

So because 1 of 50 states sucks at educating its populace, the remainder must be controlled by the feds.

Texas begs to differ, comrade.

Let me list some surprising things about education in Mississippi. Its not the best in the nation, but it isn't as bad as it is made out to be.

For example, education rankings have teacher salaries and union activity that make up a good bit of the ranking. It doesn't cost as much to live in MS, so the salaries are low. And there is no teacher's union. These rankings penalize Mississippi greatly for this, but its actually a strength.

Mississippi's education woes can be tied to bloated administrative salaries. The state superintendent of education is the highest paid in the country. Then there are 150+ school districts in 82 counties. In the county that I live, there are two districts. One district is one of the best in the South - with National Merit Semifinalists and 30+ ACT scores the norm. The other district is one of the worst in the state. This is not just one county - there are multiple instances of this. It could be easily fixed, but if you say anything, you are deemed a racist.

If you had the federal government out of the way, some decisions could be made that would make Mississippi much better educationally. The feds say we have to fund schools one way, even though it doesnt make sense. The feds say that district lines have to be drawn a certain way - even though it doesnt make sense.

I am a firm believer in the power to move. You don't like how a state is handling your kid's education, move to a state that does it the way you want.

I agree with your premise, but the scoring has been changed a couple of times over the last few decades, just not to the extent in your example. A score of 30 in the 80s would be lower now.

They also replaced what was considered easier rubrics (social science) with reading comp. and Natural Science (which was just deductive reasoning) with an actual science section.

So comparing scores from 3 decades ago isn't really apples to apples.

Good start, indeed.

It’s a 1% cut in overall annual expenditures. Without reading anything, it’s likely just slowing the rate of growth.

He should cut it and everything else. Unfortunately this money is going to be spent elsewhere.

bullshite. The test was congruent to the courses back then. Sure, the exact same questions might produce a lower score today, but the curriculums are more advanced today which correlates with the test questions.

So a smart student doing the work to make a 30 today, is equivalent to a smart student doing the work 30 years ago.
Todays student would be probably higher educated than 30 year ago student, but thats due to curriculum advancing, not the student being better

If we ever reclaim our prior position as an independent nation, Louisiana and Mississippi need to be careful or we will annex them as vassal territories.

Waiting for LSU professor to tweet this article and complain about using a vacuum he bought at wal mart to dust his class room.

Then i’ll know its time to be triggered.

Access to more Gulf ports, Mississippi River access, and a major shipyard (plus more oil in LA) will make up for things.

As a fan of states rights, I agree with this 100% including but not exclusive to education. Unfortunately, uniparty wants every state and city to be exactly the same. A goddamn shame.
