Trump PrEP program
So I know that most of the board is very socially conservative. What is your feeling on this program?
Basically it will provide free, very effective HIV prevention meds to uninsured individuals who are at high risk to get HIV. The guidelines for this are men who have sex with other men and have more than one partner a month.
In an economic, humanitarian and public health sense, it seems to be a very good idea.
But are you afraid that it eliminates the personal responsibility and ethical considerations of gay men who are extremely promiscuous?
Is it a stamp of approval for behavior that is 100% against societal and biblical standards?

If you can't convince people with a disease to avoid contact with other individuals who may contract that disease, then this is a better alternative to isolation camps.

No, because they would probably do it anyway.

Maybe in 1950, but not now.

Well since the cia created aids, I guess we have a moral obligation to help fix the problem.
Hate the sin, not the sinner.

Good move by Trump. You can't spin this negatively regardless of political stance.

YOU can eliminate HIV in your life, every day.
1. Use a condom to frick strangers.
2. Don't stick needles in your arm.
3. There is no 3
That is it. Congrats, you now have a greater than 99% chance of not contracting HIV in America.

Do not support.
1. Nothing you are providing is free. I pay for it.
2. They made a choice. The consequences are theirs, not mine. See number 1.
3. Don't give 2 fricks about the societal or biblical standards. It falls in the same category as the fat arse who eats himself to 350# at 5'8" and then has his insurance company (me) pay for his blood pressure (among other) medications.
4. Where does it end? Do we start providing insulin for type 1 diabetics? Personally I am more inclined to do that. They didn't choose that life.
Take responsibility for your actions.

There is a 3, you can take PREP, a single pill everyday. It has helped reduce transmission rates already.

It is them or us, if we do insure they are free of this illness it will be us in some way or another. Mentally ill people have difficulty helping, caring or protecting themselves, much less having a societal responsibility

Under the agreement with HHS, the company donates the medication but the government must cover costs of the program, which include determining if someone who applies is eligible as well as distribution and processing claims. Currently that will run the government about $200 a bottle for a 30- or 60-day prescription,
There will be medicine for 200,000 people per year. It will have a cost even if the medicine is donated. I don't like the idea of subsidizing risky behavior.

My stance is nothing is truly free, and the unintended consequences are never considered.
Pay your damn bill!
Pay your damn bill!

You know how consistent people who can't follow the first two rules are at taking a pill daily? How often do women get pregnant because they forgot the pill?

Does anyone know what this pill does? AIDS is an autoimmune deficiency. Will this pill boost your autoimmune system in general? Like, for someone that doesn't have the disease, will they see a boost in overall autoimmune health? That could be something in and of itself. There are loads of other things that may be able to be "cured" with this medicine. Not to mention just overall wellness from a boosted immune system.
ETA: and to take that thought a little farther, what will be the overall net gain to the insured if everyone was just healthier in general thanks to this medicine? Could it not pay for itself?

I don’t have the numbers, but I bet the cost of the pill to help reduce the spread of HIV if given to all at risk people is probably much less then the cost of treating the fraction that gets AIDS later own so it’s likely a net positive.

It's important to understand the difference between HIV and AIDS. HIV is the virus, AIDS is the disease that results from HIV when your immune system becomes severely compromised.
PREP pills are for those who do not have HIV. It prevents (not 100% but its very high) them from being able to contract HIV.
There are antiretoviral drugs that those with HIV take daily to keep the amount of the virus to a level so low that it is undetectable in blood tests. At that point, it 100% eliminates the chance to pass along the virus.
