Yes, this is the key and it is an echo of the Iranian hostage crisis in the 70s. The issue of Israel/Palestine is complex and no one's hands are clean, but Hamas has taken hostages and that should not be allowed to stand.

Attacking civilians like they did on Oct 7th, taking hostages and then holding them for all of this time is barbarism that must be eradicated - the people responsible must die.
I say Israel must follow the Law of Armed Conflict as best as possible. I don't know whether they really are. But, aside from that, my other points stand.
