It shouldn't stay the same, have you ever measured that and tested your theory of it staying the same?

When ice melts it actually takes up less volume. True story.

Well that is true, but because of buoyancy. When ice is floating it's volume under the water displaces the mass of the water that is equivalent to the mass of the entire cube...so basically when ice melts the level of water should not change because the mass has not changed. The extra volume that exists when water is in solid form rather than liquid form is above the surface of the water.

Funny how melting Sea Ice is a major flood concern.

Can't deny the science though.

You know it's not just about water displacement, right?

Actually, the water level goes down because ice is less dense than liquid water.

The area of displacement would get smaller.

That is true, but not all of the ice is in the water, so it's a wash.

Its not a wash. If all of the worlds ice melted it would raise the sea level somewhere between 60-75 meters.

Most of that ice is landlocked though

What happens if ice sitting on an incline outside your glass melts and travels downward into the glasses opening that is placed at the bottom of that hill?

What happens to the water level of the glass? Does it rise, fall, or stay the same?

A floating glacier already displaces it’s weight in water, so by definition (because it’s weight in water = volume of displacement) it can’t add to a rise in sea level.

By definition there is no such thing as a "floating glacier". Glaciers exist exclusively on land. A glacier that has gone into the sea is an iceberg. Melting glacier ice adds to sea levels, theoretically considerably so.

The more you know

That's because of the ice that is currently on land, not displacing any water...and all of the ice in the world isn't going to melt.
