Is this clear? Lots of people dying 3-4 decades early has to be a net financial benefit to the system, doesn't it? (particularly when you factor in the massive taxes taken in)

If this is the basis for banning things, half of what we eat and drink would be banned. South Park really nailed the anti-smoking crowd years back: authoritarian zealots who want to take away the little bit of joy many working class people get from a smoke. And I'm not a smoker.

Yet we talk about the war on drugs and the imports into this country.

All the while shipping tobacco around the world.

I am not denying what you are saying, as a former smoker and dipper, there is nothing good about tobacco. BUT, I knew a few people who died of lung cancer and NEVER smoked a cigarette in their lives. Welders have a high rate of LC...I am not defending tobacco because it is dangerous stuff. I am a two-time cancer survivor, one was caused by chemicals and the second was by the TREATMENT for cancer #1

You can live off of the caloric intake of a soft drink or some shitty McDonald’s “food”.
Doesn't mean it's not a radically bigger drain on the healthcare system.

It is. The poster is right about sugar. Full stop.

Can't think of anything else legal that if you consume it as it's intended, it can kill you.

Somebody: But alcohol

Me: That's meant to be enjoyed occasionally as a refreshment. That isn't deadly.

And Limbaugh would say that the government should not make it illegal.

It is certainly not good for ones health. Probably has a place in this world for its use (doesn’t it deter pests/bugs?) and even its consumption. Life on this earth eventually comes to an end for us all. The older I get the more I realize you can do “everything right” and you may well die earlier than those who did it all “wrong”.

And Marijuana has 3 times the cancer causing chemicals and tar as cigarettes. Now I know Rush smoked cigars and probably inhaled but still....

Sad about him, but we are speaking about something as addictive as heroine, just because you make it illegal will not stop people from using it, it would just increase the crime in buying and selling it. It is taxed enough and people who smoke are well aware of the risk.

Why is it that one-third of adults [worldwide] have high blood pressure, when in 1900 only 5 percent had high blood pressure?’ he asked.

‘Why did 153 million people have diabetes in 1980, and now we’re up to 347 million?

Why are more and more Americans obese? Sugar is the culprit.

Recently the American Heart Association added its voice to the warnings against too much added sugar in the diet.

But its rationale is that sugar provides calories with no nutritional benefit. According to Johnson and his colleagues, this misses the point. Excessive sugar isn’t just empty calories; it’s toxic.’ “

Agree with all but point 3. If not that, it will some other expensive treatment further down the road for something else like dementia.
