Time once again to point out the benefits Louisiana's Government Class has

JBE is already talking about raising taxes and soon the polyester clad legislature will be working on the budget.
Please remember when JBE threatens LSU football or says raising taxes is a life or death thing that he NEVER proposes taxing the large retirements of the government retirees.
The rest of us pay taxes on our retirement income but some estimates say the state misses over $100 million in revenues as state and federal government retirees do not pay any state income taxes.

I’m amazed this wasn’t a film credits thread.

We need to stop calling it a budget; it's an initial spending bill

That includes the pensions earned by the legislators themselves. And that's why you won't see a change.

True? I’m not a state worker so I don’t keep up with their retirement pension tax treatment.
Are you also gonna mention how each legislator has a FREE ticket to the Sugar Bowl?

Can we tax Social Security income as well?

That is because it would be an unconstitutional taking. All that can be done is altering the plan for people not already in the system.

No it wouldn’t be. He is just calling for retirement to be taxed. That is completely legal.
In a separate thread we could discuss what can and cannot be done with retirement reform. Despite what the retirement systems tell you, not every change would be an unconstitutional taking.

Umm... his exact words were " he NEVER proposes taking the large retirements of the government retirees."
That is different than beginning to tax them which many will argue would also be a taking.

Did you mean to say "taking" or did you mean to say "taxing"?

Has the state signed a contract with these retired people that states it will forever be tax free? They surely haven't signed one with federal retirees and military retirees who get the same deal.
Taxing it may be a political bloodbath but I don't think it would be unconstitutional.

What government retirees besides State Police and gubernatorial appointees get these "large retirements?" I'd like to know, because my retirement after 33 years of service sure as Hell isn't going to be large.

But taxing everyone else is okay.

Don’t panic!
Governor Tax and Spend will once again pay for the bloated spending with a billion dollar tax increase.
Remain calm as your children leave the state for economic opportunities elsewhere! Just think of it as a travel opportunity to visit them in different parts of the country during the holidays!

Well I meant taxing but that too is taking.

I would support that but as a compromise I would say let's simply exempt $35000 in income for everybody over 65 and be done with it.
There are quite a few government retirees with 6 figure pension payments that go untaxed.

Well he never moves to end film industry welfare either--not even the year he said raising taxes meant life or death.

You just did and that too should end and so should free tickets to LSU football game for any state employee including the Governor.

Well, large can be a relative term. You will get about 80% of your final pay (82.5% of your final 3 years).
What do you think someone making you salary will get in Social Security? I need exact numbers to get an answer, but it's about 40% of final pay. Figure in some additional investment and higher private sector pay (maybe) and maybe that number gets to 60% of final pay.
So yeah, relatively speaking, you have a larger retirement after 33 years.

Eh. I don't think anyone should be given a tax break, but if we do... shouldn't it be the actual workers?
Everyone bitches about young people leaving the state. Maybe we should not tax the first $35,000 of earned income for all Louisiana residents under age 40. That might help, a bit, in keeping young people from going to Texas and their no state income tax.
