Would never work. Unconstitutional. We are guaranteed a secret ballot in the U.S. Putting fingerprints on ballots ties a voter to how he/she voted.
There are other more sophisticated ways that might work while still retaining anonymity with individual votes.

Mail in and absentee ballots aren't secret ballots.
You have to sign your name to them
Every where voter ID is required the ballots aren't secret either.
You have to sign a role after you show ID and then you are given a ballot.
The ballot number can be matched to the names on the roll

Can just collect the metadata. IE, 1 actual live person living in the respective district. How the voter voted is unattached.
