Thou shall not kill

This was written into law a very long time ago, at a time when firearms were yet to be invented.
What new law would make any of us feel safer? Thou shall live in a bubble?

The Ten Commandments are a no-go these days.
Posted on 2/16/18 at 7:40 am to BestBanker
quote:
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
More of this is needed.

Murder is the correct translation

Sorry. I only referenced a law of an ancient people; one that indicated that people would be held accountable for murder.

The Bible is not legislated.

Thou shalt not kill is an alien term in modern America. We celebrate perpetual war around the globe, the death penalty and abortion on demand. If Christ were to return today and run for political office, he would be skewered by most politicians and voters of both parties.

Going back 60 to 80 years ago it was not uncommon for high schools to have shooting teams and clubs and were allowed to bring their guns to school and store them in their lockers. This did not result in a plague of school shootings. Even since I went to high school in the 80s gun regulations have increased and school shootings went from non-existent when I was in school to common place now. I had a high school class of 30. Out of those 30 there were at least 7 or 8 boys, (myself included) who owned guns for hunting and used them often in hunting season. None of us ever thought about shooting up our school. We were taught that killing someone is not only a bad thing, it is the worst thing you can ever do. It's not the amount of guns that have changed it is the nonchalantness in which they are used now that has changed.
Adding more gun control laws is only trying to relieve one of the symptoms of the disease. It will do nothing to actually cure the disease. The disease isn't the availability of guns. The disease is the lack of conscience in the willingness to use them on innocent people. Take away the symptom and the disease still exists. People with the disease will switch to bombs, running over people with vehicles, or invent a totally new and previously unthought of way to kill scores of people.
Actually curing the disease will require studying the brains of people who do these things not just forcing them to use something different to do these things. Unlike the gun control freaks I am not looking for an answer to this problem. I am looking for the right answer to this problem. If society can take the time to study the brains of dead NFL players to learn about concussions then it should be easy for society to take the time to study the brains of dead psychopaths to learn about their lack of conscience regarding the taking of human lives.

God commanded the Israelites to kill multitudes of people in enemy countries in the Old Testament. So, obviously, some war time killing is either justified, or God doesn't adhere to his own commandments?

This was written into "law" at a time when humans were still much more ignorant of the world around them. It's not even accurate, and outside of a few hippies, most would agree that it isn't something we should fundamentally adhere to.

Actually, the correct translation is "Thou shall not murder".
You have the right to kill someone in self defense.

Killing your enemy in war is okay because it is not murder.
It is killing in self defense.

This from the Jewish liturgy.
Also, the commandment reads” thou shalt not murder”, which is not the same as thou shalt not kill. The translation is commonly incorrect.

Hell, at my high school, kids had *gasp* gun racks in their trucks with rifles and shotguns right there for all to see.
Of course, we could fist-fight without getting expelled too so that kept a lot of bullshite beta mouth running to a minimum.

Perhaps if they hadn't banned 'thou shalt not kill' from the schools where they are having all these shootings.
