The Taxpayer pays to offset the losses on wind farm. Had the Federal Government not given away tax payer dollars to make a wind farm profitable, there would be no wind farms. All Wind Farms are tied to a transmission line. It serves two purposes. Provide power to start and transport energy produced.

6 am on site 145 towers. Absolutely still. Only Birds flying around. Sun rises ...Earth heated ... wind picks up, computers tell the motors to turn on. Tons of metal and fiberglass start to turn. Wind speed reaches a point where the blades keep the propeller turning. Production is OFF peak. Sun sets, wind dies down. Wind farm goes to sleep. Computers consume power until the wind reaches the desired speed again. Guess where that power comes from?

In most cases a fossil fuel plant producing power at the end of that transmission line. In other words no power plant, no transmission line, no intertie to the wind or solar farm. I know of few wind farms who get power from power plants getting production from Hydro. I'm talking all of North America. These people do not know what their talking about. They have never been to the base of a tower, much less 200 plus feet off the ground. Without fossil fuel, most of the country is in the dark.

There currently is no answer for an across the board elimination of fossil fuel production.

you really dont know jack shite about wind. they run 24/7 they dont goto sleep at night. solar inverters sleep, duh but not wind turbines. i spent 5 years working in wind, in the largest green energy company in north america. i transfered to solar 2.5 years ago, same company. we do not rely on tax credits to run the company. they help but are not required to be profitable. our stock is over 300 and did a 4:1 split.

Windmills only run when there is wind. Lol. They don't run 24/7.

The only way money is made on solar and win is taxpayer and grid tied customer's footing the bill.

and it doesnt take much wind. generally only need 3 to 4 mph to run. it was very rare to see our park not running when it wasnt curtailed because we made more power than was in demand.

And how many birds and bats do wind farms kill as well?

The average capacity factor of wind is about 35%. This is true about wind:

1. Some of the recent PPA prices have been very, very competitive.

2. They can be a good compliment to solar in terms of wind being less of an on-peak resource than solar.

But this is also true:

1. Wind is much harder to predict than solar.

2. Both wind and solar are only complements to, and not substitutes for, baseload generation such as natural gas, coal and (where it exists) geothermal.

Wind farms are ugly take up tons of room kill birds and can spill oil when the bearings overheat, not to mention they are NIMBY.

The answer IMO is going to be fusion if and or when it comes on line for electricity, and fuel cell technology is good to go now if we can figure a way to separate hydrogen from seawater economically. Aircraft for the foreseeable future are going to be powered by fossil fuels.

They don't make money without taxpayers, customers paying for the grid and without fossils.

not as many as people think they do. one of the few things i disagree with trump on. we should have an all of the above theory. the company i work for has nat gas combined cycle, nuclear, wind, solar pv and solar thermal.

I don't think many people are against renewable energy if it can be competitive. Many folks are against the government subsidizing these industries.

How often do you have to replace a windmill?

Don't they use lubrication?

How much energy do they take to build?

Great points, and they also do legitimately kill lots of birds.

The big ones have to be decommissioned after 25 years iirc and many times that isn't put into the calculations. I think Germany ran into that.

I'm in Illinois working at the moment..there are plenty of windmills. I've seen them plenty of times not doing shite but sitting there. The locals say they are worthless and they never seen a drop in their power bills as promised. If it weren't for the nuke down the road they couldn't keep up with demand.not even close. Huge costs with little if any payoff....Now thats what the locals say, I dont know and really don't care. If they say they are shite, I tend to believe them. Just sharing my experience.
