It is true that wind and solar are competitive to a large degree due to the PTC and ITC, but it's also true they're becoming much more competitive in their own right, even without subsidies. That said, they are only suitable at low penetration rates across a well-diversified portfolio that includes baseload generation.

For now. Battery + transmission upgrades will eventually change that. But we're still some time away from that.

See Australia as a test case.

Battery tech is the new cold fusion. Vaporware.

At small scale, I disagree. At large scale, I agree.

I would love a real explanation on these wind farms for what I’ve seen with my own eyes. I’ve driven much of the country and past hundreds and hundreds of these windmills in these wind farms

For the life of me I cannot understand why in a close group of 20+ windmills 1 will be spinning in the middle and the other 19 are absolutely static. Is wind selective?

I wonder what they use to cut down on friction? They grease those bearings?

The big ones have to be decommissioned after 25 years iirc and many times that isn't put into the calculations. I think Germany ran into that.

and many times that isn't put into the calculations

Where did you come up with this? Any reputable study about the levelized cost of energy absolutely includes the cost of decommissioning.

LCOE of wind has been steadily declining. Offshore turbines are now being designed at 13MW capacity each (GE just announced).

Capacity factor (mentioned by a poster above) has been steadily increasing. The latest CP of offshore wind farms is approaching 65%, which is equivalent to many other sources of power.

ETA: Major international O&G giants are getting in on the offshore wind train (Shell, BP, Statoil, DONG, Total, Eni....)

Very true, and both the PTC and ITC are phased/phasing out.
