AI is really broken into a couple fields.
Mathematical algorithm development, this is typically done by mathematicians and often useless for decades.
The papers on deep learning came out in the late 1960s
The current cool algo is cosine similarity which does all the NLP that is happening today.
Big Data/Feature Labeling
Curating and accessing big data for training models
HW Design
Post GPU architectures are being worked that are better for AI applications
Layer Development/Training
How layers are structured and now many are needed
Interpretative SW
Some SW needs to guide the AI Algos.
I don't think he's an expert in any of them, but from what I read he understands the concepts and had worked in some earlier parts.
He probably knows more than I do, but I wouldn't make myself the AI head...

If they want the electives then they can go to a school that offers it. And this doesn't have to be for the young 18yo but could be for 35+ yos that are looking to change paths. Get them in and out quickly and well trained.
