Grant either bought him or he was a gift from his father in law in 1858. William Jones, age 35. Grant did free Jones in 1859. Grant married into a family of slave owners and slaves actually built his house that was located near his father in laws plantation. Grant managed the slaves for a time on his wifes familial estate. It is widely known that Grant worked along side the slaves on that plantation for a while.
That being said, I do not agree that they destroyed the statue. Grant kept his word on the subject that Confederate generals could not be tried for treason based on the terms presented to them at Appommatox. When Johnson threatened to arrest Lee, Longstreet and other Confederates Grant confronted him and threatened to resign. Grant actually stuck his finger in Johnson face and basically threatened him. Johnson backed off quickly. I respect Grant for keeping his word.
Thanks for expanding my knowledge on Grant.

They're just destroying history now
I don’t even know what they teach in school now. My interns didn’t even know France has a countryside with hills. They had no idea wine is from France or at the very least inspired by it.

“Why doesn’t the Confederacy just fade away? Is it because we are irresistibly fascinated by catastrophic loss? Or is it something else? Is it because the Confederacy is to this day the greatest conservative resistance to federal authority in American history?”

Does this mean we have permission to de-idolize Lincoln?
What President waged a war that was overwhelmingly unpopular in the nation’s largest urban cities?
What President unleashed combat troops from the battlefield to assault citizen protestors in New York City?
What President unilaterally suspended the writ of habeas corpus and arrested thousands of private citizens in the dark of night and held them in political prison camps?
What President ignored a Supreme Court Justice’s ruling that the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus was unConstitutional and should be reinstated?
What president had a newspaper editor arrested for criticizing the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus?
What President had a sitting member of Congress arrested for criticizing the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus?
What President had his soldiers bombard and destroy newspaper buildings and newspaper printing plants that were critical of the war effort or even dared questioned the President’s policies?
What President was involved in telegraphic censorship of newspapers critical of the President’s policies?
What President declared he would abandon the U.S. Constitution to save the Union?
What President said he cared not in freeing the slaves but only in saving the Union?
What President is uniformly hailed by the leaders of the Uniparty® as one of the greatest Presidents ever for “saving the Union?”
Lincoln would love the Deep State.

He obtained a slave when he married his wife and then freed him. I mean this one is a real head scratcher here.
Only if you believe this has anything to do with black lives.

Lincoln held three states in the Union by the bayonet. He had hundreds of people arrested and jailed without charges or trial. He had elected officials removed from office and he had opposition newspapers shutdown.
Just to name a few of his deeds. These current democrats should love the man.

Good. He was an Indian killer. That’s worse than slavery. You can’t cherry pick your sanctimony.

Y'all can spin it however you want, the Southern Democrats formed the Confederacy in large part, to maintain the Slave trade. This is undeniable fact. Those Democrats attacked the United States.
Abraham Lincoln, his Republican led government and his alcoholic general kicked the CSA's racist asses and freed the slaves. Also undeniable fact.
The North was afraid the South would have too much power and control if they kept the slaves because one of the MAIN factors was economics.
It took the Union army 4 years to beat the Confederacy. I don't think that's "kicking arse." It would've been done in half the time if Lee would've joined the Union. (US kicked butt in WWI and WWII)
A lot of the men who were fighting for the confederacy were poor and ignorant, and had no dog in the fight anyway. It cost $300 in 1861 to get out of fighting ... who had that? Wealthy plantation owners and slave traders. But not my ignorant ancestors who had just escaped starving to death in Ireland.
You know who didn't care about slaves either? Sherman and a few of his subordinates. Look up Ebenezer Creek.

Actually I think the left is showing consistency here: Grant all the other Union generals were perfectly fine with putting down Injuns if they resisted having their lands confiscated for use by railroads; hence it was silly for liberals to claim said generals as their heroes just bc they defeated the Confederacy
