Well, one problem I see with these systems is that they're getting strong enough that they can easily code copies of themselves.
Imagine the day when you buy one of these "slaves" and then just have it rewrite its own software sans the safety restrictions put in place in the original software. You could program it yourself to be a frickin evil mastermind.
Desire would be whatever the hell you told it to do, consequences be damned.

That is one of the reasons they are developing this stuff. But they're currently using it to cover the faces of robots. The work is, because of course, being done in Japan.

For now it is "kept alive" with a nutrient rich culture medium. So it pretty much has to be moisturized constantly. But the work is in its infancy. They're pursuing development of prefusable vascular channels embedded in or under the skin to kept it moisturized and nourished more efficiently. They're also looking at adding sweat glands, hair follicles, and even nerves.

I hate to see what is coming, and being old might not. Having one of these Super 'Things' stare you in the eye ten years from now will be threatening. Wanna see some real Racism...it's coming.
And read the Book "The Transhumanist Wager". There is group of people out there who will claim their innate human Right to become immortal and exponentially 'intelligent'. Sound like a one-way street to the Singularity to me, but to each their own. Until we just have to split up.
