The Pentagon's #3 man, John Rood, has resigned. Trump had requested his resignation. Rood is the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. This man worked directly under the SecDef.

quote:

John Rood served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, assuming the position under former defense secretary James Mattis in January 2018.

Not much is being said about why this guy was asked to leave, but here's what he apparently said to Trump in his resignation letter.

quote:

In his resignation letter addressed to the president and dated Feb. 19, Rood wrote, "It’s my understanding from Secretary Esper that you requested my resignation from serving as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. Senior administration officials appointed by the President serve at the pleasure of the President, and therefore, as you have requested, I am providing my resignation effective February 28, 2020,” his letter said.

Link is from ABC. LINK

President Trump is pretty mum about it all. Here is his Tweet addressing the issue.

quote:

I would like to thank John Rood for his service to our Country, and wish him well in his future endeavors!

LINK

And here is an article from a site I've never even heard of before called foreign policy(dot)com addressing this.

quote:

Three years into U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, the Pentagon is bleeding senior policymakers faster than it can replace them, an exodus that many current and former defense officials largely blame on a toxic work environment created by John Rood, the Defense Department’s top policy official.

Are these bad apples in the Pentagon being forced out or is it something else? It sounds somewhat ominous saying we are losing senior officials faster than we can replace them, but I'm gonna take this as a good sign.

My guess is that these folks are the folks that don't agree with the President's desire to abandon the neo-liberal Middle East doctrine we have been pursuing since Ronald Reagan. IMO, these are the warhawk types like John Bolton being purged from the military ranks.

I'd be interested in hearing any insight someone else may have in these matters.

Trump should tell him to GTFO now, not Feb 28th.

Sounds like Rood is a gigantic a-hole, but there could be more to the situation. Or he could just be a gigantic a-hole.

There are 1.4 million DOD employees. We'll be okay.

Ennh, there are more than enough bureaucrats to replace the old ones. Meet the new employee, same as the old employee.

I suspect they can be replaced with quickness ... IF NECESSARY.

E.g., 250 members serving on the NSC are not necessary.

Good point.

Maybe someone has decided we don't actually need five under secretaries? Especially one dedicated to "policy?" After all, it's the President's job to set policy and the dudes in the Pentagon are tasked with carrying that policy out.

Sounds like this Rood guy was maybe just a highly placed deep stater? One of these guys that thinks that they dictate policy and not the President? I don't know if there's any truth in that, but we sure have seen a lot of that shite lately.

I'm guessing because we finally have a President that doesn't knuckle under to the bureaucrats.

Is it just me that thinks this is like 2 years over due? Oh, and add the state department to the extreme enema list.

Supposedly they've already purged the State Department. It seems like an entire floor of that building was cleared out. The "seventh floor", if I remember correctly. The SES.

Considering who was responsible for nominating the senior defense officials for the eight years before 2016, I would say that this is an excellent development.

In his role at the Pentagon, which involved building partnerships and encouraging defense cooperation with US allies and partners, Rood certified to Congress that Ukraine was eligible to receive $250 million in security assistance. That aid was temporarily withheld at the White House's direction last summer.

While the Trump administration has argued that it withheld the aid because of concerns about corruption, Trump was accused of using the aid to pressure Ukraine to advance his political aims.

In May, before the president decided to withhold the aid, Rood said in a letter to lawmakers that he "certified that the Government of Ukraine has taken substantial actions to make defense institutional reforms for the purposes of decreasing corruption, increasing accountability, and sustaining improvements of combat capability enabled by U.S. assistance."

The letter, which was leaked in September, undermined the administration's argument.

The Pentagon shouldn't have policy makers. Elected officials should make policy.

When can we expect his op-Ed of grave concern in the WaPo or NYT?
