Not only that, decades of consumer economy mindset has warped the mind of the average US citizen. People cannot go without their Cheesecake Factory, F150, or PlayStation. Our entire conception of freedom/liberty in this country is wrapped around consumption. If we went into a total war economy, people from both parties (perhaps even worse among supposed conservatives who are really just reactionary liberals) would end up being wreckers whining about how they can’t drive their big truck anymore due to energy rationing or something similar.

We have to reindustrualize. Our impressive financial and biotechnology sectors don't mean squat when the bullets start flying.
All too true.

That's what our generals thought in Vietnam.
Turns out, you've got to fight to win regardless of what you have.
That's right. We had complete control of the skies all through our time in Vietnam - and we still lost.

Ammo makers would simply have to stop making commercial ammunition and focus solely on stuff for the armed forces.
Yeah, no big deal to take a factory producing these….
And swapping over to producing these…
And these…
And especially these…
No problem at all.

Yes. There are 500 horses in the British military.
They also have spoons and forks, but neither are germane to your post.

The defeat in Vietnam didn’t happen on the battlefield. It happened in Washington. From a strictly military standpoint, the Vietnam was completely lopsided. By 1968, the Viet Cong had been totally destroyed as a cohesive military force and had to have its ranks rebuilt by transferring huge numbers of NVA regulars into it. As for the NVA, when they launched their huge Tet Offensive that was the so-called “turning point” of the war, it was an unmitigated disaster for them. All but one of the roughly 7 NVA divisions committed to the offensive were bled white and none of their military objectives were achieved. Tet was a huge military victory for the US. But it was portrayed by the media as a defeat. In short, they lied.

These are the kind of stories Southerners after the Civil War told themselves and Germans after World War I too. The truth is that Nixon conspired with foreign powers to prevent the 1968 peace treaty discussions to help his electoral chances then proceeded to fight the war for 4 more years for a better deal only to basically get the 1968 deal.
Edit: Just realized this is a real history repeating itself scenario with Biden, Trump, and Bibi. I believe we will find that Trump and Bibi conspired to keep the Gaza War going until after the election because the war was demotivating for the young Democratic Party voter turnout. Additionally, I think we're going to end up getting ourselves more directly involved in this conflict if we end up actually sending peacekeeping force.

We should have leveled that whole dam area. Would’ve saved tons of Americans lives. Imagine the generations of families forever changed by the way we decided to fight that war.
Or may, just maybe, we could have minded our own business. Vietnam’s internal politics had nothing to do with us.

It’s shown us what a modern war would look like, the Army isn’t very interested in the lessons learned though. They’re institutionally inconvenient

Westmoreland wouldn't listen to anything he didn't already believe. He kept trying for those WW2-style "big battles", instead of listening to the counterinsurgency and pacification types, who had ideas of real value.
He was the absolute wrong guy to be in charge in Viet Nam. He was an airborne artillerymen with no perspective of that kind of war, dealing with a corrupt Vietnamese
government and an equally corrupt and inept Vietnamese army.
