We lay our mines... 3 miles wide.
Iran can't collect.
We can let pass what we want.
Alternative delivery developes.
Mines stay till iran agrees to terms.
Remove After a 2 year wait to ensure they live up.

We already have a blockade that keeps Iran from doing any business in the Strait. We gain nothing by mining it except for blowing up ships we would like to see pass safely.

We save money and allow our resources to be utilized elsewhere. If we mine it we need minniminal support staff.
Thats the bennifit.
Not to mention we could allow through anyone we wanted...
They can't use it, and it doesn't cost a fortune to secure it.
We can focus air power on their overland routes and choke them out

No personal offense or insult intended here, but it just is what it is, because you take that position, it is actually strong, reliable IMO reason to cross that off the list of realistic possibilities.

We will still need assets to monitor the safe passage channel through the minefield. With nobody there, it becomes an Iranian superhighway for their ships and the ships we want to pass through there probably won't.
Do you think with the lack of our assets in the area that the Iranian speedboats & ground based anti-ship missiles would just disappear? It would be open season for them to attack those vessels.

Before I would even choose to jump into debate of the effectiveness aspect, me personally, it wouldn’t pass muster on the basis of recklessness in the threat that poses to innocent peoples. I mean, technically you are targeting non-involved, “innocent” third parties, to the extent that they are too fearful to go anywhere near the relevant areas/sea lanes. Pretty much precisely what Iran itself has been up to. Speaking of, what are you up to? This seems like strange topic.

Its not at all a strange topic. We could completley control it with lanes of shipping we approve.
Cuts Iran's legs off. Takes a negotiation point off the table. And allows us to reduce assets in the arena.

Yep, insurance isn't going to cover those ships to go through a minefield in those conditions. Plus it would be a huge bottleneck that would leave every ship there vulnerable. Not gonna happen no matter how much he thinks it's a good idea.

US mining and engineering assets in general are low priority, and we have limited stocks and capabilities. It is unlikely we have the minelaying capability to effectively control the SoH. Countermobility operations all impact your own mobility, which can be a huge hindrance. Countermobility emplacements have to be covered by observation and direct and/or indirect fire to be effective. The benefits would be relatively small, and the negatives are relatively large. Not really a viable option.
