I'm curious if this is a uniquely cultural thing among the African-American community or if this same culture persists within the African continent and the tribes from which their heritage existed before they came to this continent. Any background data on that? Or is this unique to the fact that the U.S. social safety net programs encourage it?
In the US, Blacks have had a higher rate of out-of-wedlock births for as long as records have been kept. Most folks attribute it to the legacy of slavery, where fathers were often separated from their children involuntarily and where many children were sired by “absent fathers.” (absent being defined as “up at the big house”).

In short, the theory is that American Blacks have historically had a subculture in which such births were less of an aberration and less likely to make a woman a pariah.

The data goes back to about 1900, as I recall. Moynihan called it “Black Matriarchy.”

Before some idiot starts a Tourettes spasm about the Great Society, I agree wholeheartedly that it “greatly” exacerbated the pre-existing trend.

All part of the plan of the left.

It is working wonderfully!

Just wait until we finish importing millions of third world voters on top of this.

That's "progress"!

And 29.1% of non-Hispanic whites. That would be an obvious disaster if the other numbers weren’t apocalyptic.

Nice try putting the onus on something from 200 years ago.

Poverty and education is the primary reason you stinky lib.

Take it up with noted Lib Thomas Sowell.

The Great Society exacerbated the problem. No one with a brain says otherwise. But it did not cause a trend that predates its enactment by 3/4 of a century or more.

I will never understand why objective data bothers you people so much, OR why it is never enough for someone to largely agree with you ... unless that person drinks your Kool-Aid and agrees with you 100%. Just strange.

Libs would say if we let all the dads out of jail now, they would go back and be responsible fathers and husbands.

Re: Chile

quote:

Analysts attribute the change to a law that went into effect last year doing away with legal distinctions between children born in wedlock and those born outside of wedlock. The new law provided child support for all children if a couple separates and gave all children equal inheritance benefits. It also provided for the use of DNA testing to determine paternity.

Objective data? Where?

All you posted was a chart showing out of wedlock births for blacks increasing after the 1960s. Kinda sounds like after the Civil Rights "reform" was put into place.
