The Ukrainians are in the middle of their offensive.

quote:

Many on the ukrainian and western side had anticipated hard initial resistance from RuAF, but after 2-3 days fighting and advances of around 6-8 km, they expected an increasing collapse of russian morale and the real breakthroughs would come. Nothing of this seems to be other than wishful thinking, since fighting still are in the grey zone and russian resistance are unbroken. At the same time ukrainian forces take heavy casulties both in soldiers and vehicles.

The offensive isn't over yet and the main ukrainian attack fist remains with probably over 600 tanks and as many IFVs around Orikhiv. But the future for the ukrainian offensive looks bleak if their vanguard is destroyed before they reach the russian main defencelines. The probability is large that Ukraine has to use up their main force to get through a couple of the russian defencelines and then they will run out of forces to exploit any successes and be forced to withdraw.

Good. Hopefully this causes them to finally give up and we get an end to this thing.

Basically the same thing the BBC was reporting. Another issue of note. The Ukranians are in Russian Ukranian territory, the same people they have been killing for nearly a decade with impunity. Every armor movement, troop movement, etc. has been reported to the Russians long before they started.

Such a needless waste of humanity on both sides.

The headline on social media tonight was that the Ukrainians were pausing their offensive. Ukrainian media has been downbeat for the past week, they’ve realized that this is not going well.

We’ll see if they try again, but nothing will change if they do

The Russians have a layered defense, eh?

Doesn't help your cause when you advertise for months you are going to mount an offensive...

Shades of Kursk.

The Russians have abandoned any pretense of modern tactics and returned to heavy fixed lines of artillery, heavy bombardments, and outnumbering their enemy in amounts of men and materials. This is now a logistics and attrition war.

That was the end of any major offensive ability of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern front. Pretty much the end of their dynamic riposte style defense as well. Brutal

Agree, but unfortunately war will spread all across Europe before it is over.

Wait...WHAT? How?

Nuclear weapons? Ok that is could theoretically happen.

But war spreading across Europe? How? Russia hasn't even been able to maintain war spread across Ukraine, and they're majorly weakened. They have no military allies of substance.

80% of this board is disgusted with the U.S. escalating the situation and giving $100 billion to Ukraine when congress didn't have $5 billion to defend our own border.

It's wild this whole thing probably could have been avoided on NATO neutrality.

quote:

New evidence is emerging that a peace deal was achievable at the beginning of the war. At a recent meeting with the African delegation, Putin showed the draft of an outline or preliminary agreement signed by the Ukrainian delegation at Istanbul in April 2022. It provided that Russia would pull back to pre-war lines if Ukraine would agree not to join NATO (but Ukraine could receive security guarantees from the West).

This document has not been publicly released yet, but no one seriously contests that it exists. The only dispute is over what happened subsequently; Ukraine (via reporting in Reuters) contends the deal fell apart. However, the availability of a deal based on Ukrainian Neutrality is consistent with previous comments from Naftali Bennett, who said a deal was attainable but rejected by the West.

Why would the West do this? Ukrainska Pravda (UP), a pro-Ukraine publication, reported in May 2022:

“As soon as the Ukrainian negotiators and Abramovich/Medinsky [the Russian negotiators], following the outcome of Istanbul, had agreed on the structure of a future possible agreement in general terms, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared in Kyiv almost without warning. "Johnson brought two simple messages to Kyiv. The first is that Putin is a war criminal; he should be pressured, not negotiated with. And the second is that even if Ukraine is ready to sign some agreements on guarantees with Putin, they are not. We can sign (an agreement) with you (Ukraine), but not with him. Anyway, he will screw everyone over", is how one of Zelenskyy's close associates summed up the essence of Johnson's visit.”

Awaiting White House propaganda offensive sugarcoating this calamity to sustain dwindling support for this misadventure in US. Revelation that UK &US leaders sabotaged April 2022 peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. puts blame for this terrible crime on DC neocons; 350,000 dead !!

And before it even started a similar deal was spiked.

This war was completely avoidable. The party in this conflict that actually sought diplomacy repeatedly was Russia.

Not something you'd read in the New York Times...

Yep. Zelenskyy has to keep up the illusion of having a chance. We haven't sent him enough hush money yet
