All I can say is that either Thune and the GOPe aren’t actually republicans or Trump isn’t.

Those two entities are so diametrically opposed on such a range of issues that the two can’t truly be considered to really share the same party functionally.

Almost every president has used recess appointments to appoint judges, over 300 such judicial recess appointments before 2000, including ten Supreme Court justices.
New Jersey judge William J. Brennan was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 by a recess appointment.

Presidents have used recess appointments to bypass Senate confirmation since George Washington, who first utilized the power in 1795.

While almost every president has used this authority, modern usage has varied:
Ronald Reagan: 232 or 240 recess appointments.
George W. Bush: 171 recess appointments.
Bill Clinton: 139 recess appointments.
Barack Obama: 32 recess appointments.
George H.W. Bush: 78 recess appointments.

Donald Trump has used zero recess appointments since 2020.

They're on his team.

Surely the Senate's gotten a lot of work done since they've been in session so often, right? RIGHT??

The list of Senate recesses in 2026 (so far) under Thune's leadership includes:

- Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 19 – 23, 2026
- Passover and Easter (Spring Recess): March 28 – April 12, 2026
- Memorial Day: May 23 – 25, 2026

Coming up, I'm sure they'll be out of session during Independence Day: Late June – early July 2026

Thune is blocking Trump recess appointments by holding pro forma sessions.

Thune is a giant disappointment.

Mark Meadows talking to Bannon this morning, the best we could hope for would be for Johnson to issue recess dates, then Thune would have to disagree, which in turn, then Trump can step in and force a recess. Problem with that maneuver is Johnson, imo
