Yes

Iran: “It was an engine fire!” (Fails to mention that their SAM missile started the engine fire.)

The problem with an anti-aircraft missile striking the plane is that the resulting fire and damage is not just limited to the engine. It likely punctured the wing fuel tank and started a fire and damaged the flight controls and wing enough to make controlled flight impossible.

Just looked at the OP and saw how many downvotes I was getting . Should have put the title in quotes to make it clearer that I was mocking the misdirection going on.
I thought the body of the post would make that clear, but I guess not.
I think this is most downvotes I've ever gotten (except for that time I posted a picture of Joe Burrow in drag).

Commercial jets are huge compared to a military fighter and have multiple engines. So it is entirely likely they could take a hit to one engine and have enough residual control to start to head back before the wing gives way and/or the fire from the engine reaches the fuel in the wing tanks.
Yeah - I have been seeing more info on these things - seems like there is a lot of shrapnel involved with the hit rather than just a big detonation.
I was thinking in terms of a missile hit taking off a whole wing or enough of it to render the plane uncontrollable.
But it seems now that the explosion may have damaged the engine but sprayed shrapnel all over the place = causing fuel leaks and a subsequent explosion.
not an expert at all - I am satisfied with the explanations = missile took it down.

This one is not a who done it moment. Iran shot down the plane. The video of it in the sky is more than a single engine on fire. The damn thing is engulfed in flames. Why they did it is a question but it was shot down.

Yeah that tin foil hat wearing Justin Trudeau...

Consider that upper echelon members of Iran may have given up the general to make sure he did not topple them from their own positions. This could be an inside job that results in improved relations for all in the Middle East. Think outside the box!

Iran is claiming it was a "mechanical failure". ?
Well...okay...sort of. The mechanical properties of the jet failed to withstand the missile impact

I think Hillary helped make it become a tin-foil hat definition when politicians got dirt on her - everything became a "right-wing conspiracy" - all conspiracies - which became "things not to be believed or wacko or made up or so far-fetched you'd have to be crazy to believe that."
Guess what? Conspiracies are real.
They've happened all the time throughout history.
The plot to kill Ceasar, a Conspiracy!
The plot to kill Hitler, a Conspiracy!
The murder of Lincoln, a Conspiracy! Conspiracy: A secret plan by two or more people to do something harmful or illegal.
Nowadays, if someone questions the news or shootings or the real aim or intentions of the US government, you get called a conspiracy theorist which is now synonymous with Flat Earther (which was created to discredit, real actual conspiracy theories.)
