re: The Panama Canal is running dry. That's the U.S.'s fault and the U.S.'s problem

Mountains.

When exploring expanding the Canal the feasibility studies warned that the increase in water needs to power the additional locks would stress the lakes and threaten drinking water supplies and the ability to use the canal.
This has been known for some time.

Is the water level not the same for both oceans? I assume sea level is the same everywhere with the exception of tidal changes. Why does there need to be dams and not just a channel that allows the water to flow between the two locations?
Read my post above yours. Ships enter at either ocean, get raised a hundred feet or so via locks, traverse a lake that’s NOT at sea level, and then get lowered back down on the other side.
The majority of the canal is not at sea level.

“Just make the whole thing sea level” is a really fricking dumb assessment.
But in the context of "blame America because I can't do my job" it's a fitting answer.

Still waiting for a truly scientific study to prove to me that climate change is caused by humans.
While doing that, explain how previous climate changes did not exist prior to this one? Or were those changes also due to human activity?
Instead of spending trillions of dollars making other rich people richer with this climate change reversal bullshite, why not spend money on new technologies that will make it easier for humans to withstand the impact of any climate changes... hoax or otherwise.

Is it someone’s job to make sure that it rains enough to fill Gatun lake? I’d think not.
Definitely stupid to try and blame industrialization in the US though, no doubt

Lol couldn't they just design it not to use fresh water
Sure. Pump salt wafer from lock to lock as the ships traverse up and down the elevation changes. Why is fresh water even needed?

Because almost the entirety of the canal’s traversed length is way above sea level on a man-made, freshwater lake.

If my economy depended on such a unique gold mine of industry, I might spend more time fixing those issues and less time chasing climate change, but I'm not a South American tin pot communist. If he isn't expected to be capable of resolving the issue, why are we?

Try running salt water through your car and you will see.

The ships going through the canal seem to survive somehow.

Honestly I WISH it was still our problem.
frick Jimmy Carter for giving away the canal that we built and maintained.

Jeezus christos.
Its not a river man. Lockes and gates and pumps and switches etc etc etc. Salt water corrodes and eats everything for dinner. To do a stainless steel refit on the whole canal would be very very expensive

I won't argue with any of that.

Although the canal connects two oceans, its operation depends upon fresh water from a nearby lake, which has been dwindling during a 20-year drought. As a result, there is not as much water for vessels to sail through — or for local communities to drink.
To alleviate this issue, might I suggest pumping the canal locks full of, you know, fricking saltwater from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans that border both ends of the very narrow strait?
Nah. That's too logical. Muh global warming! That's better.
Cathodic technology actually does exist to prevent oxidation caused by seawater. Marine vessels, private companies, militaries and governments have been using these technologies for decades and they improve consistently. I guess the only place nobody thought to put them was in the single busiest commercial canal in the world? Makes sense.

Why is fresh water even needed?
Almost the entire traversal of the isthmus is way above sea level on a man-made lake/waterway. The locks on either side just put the ships up into that body of water.
The middle part between Colon and PC isnt some concrete/canalized waterway. It’s an open lake with shipping channels.

Things were better in Panama when Dictator Noriega was trafficing cocaine and weapons for Reagan & the CIA.
Back then you would just send some money or guns to help Manuel oppress the people and he would just kill anyone who expressed any anti-american opinions.
RR really knew just how to control the third world - let me tell you.
