Congressional Democrats have argued that one of the best ways to pay for the legislation is to raise taxes on wealthy households, which, according to many on the left, have benefited disproportionately and unfairly from the 2017 tax reform law passed by Republicans and signed by former President Trump. The latest data, however, proves that this claim is pure mythology.

quote:

Income data published by the IRS clearly show that on average all income brackets benefited substantially from the Republicans’ tax reform law, with the biggest beneficiaries being working and middle-income filers, not the top 1 percent, as so many Democrats have argued.

quote:

A careful analysis of the IRS tax data, one that includes the effects of tax credits and other reforms to the tax code, shows that filers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $15,000 to $50,000 enjoyed an average tax cut of 16 percent to 26 percent in 2018, the first year Republicans’ Tax Cuts and Jobs Act went into effect and the most recent year for which data is available.

Filers who earned $50,000 to $100,000 received a tax break of about 15 percent to 17 percent, and those earning $100,000 to $500,000 in adjusted gross income saw their personal income taxes cut by around 11 percent to 13 percent.

quote:

By comparison, no income group with an AGI of at least $500,000 received an average tax cut exceeding 9 percent, and the average tax cut for brackets starting at $1 million was less than 6 percent. (For more detailed data, see my table published here.) That means most middle-income and working-class earners enjoyed a tax cut that was at least double the size of tax cuts received by households earning $1 million or more.

You are mistaken.

My taxes more than doubled under Trump… because my income almost tripled.

The only way this could happen is if you lived in a deep blue state and were capped at how much local and state taxes you could write off

Why should us red state tax payers subsidize your high local property taxes and state taxes….

Even then we would need to check the math on all of the provisions. The top tax bracket in CA is 12.3%. For every $1,000, you're losing $123 deduction. 37% fed tax on $1,000 = $370. 39.6% of $877 = $347. So an income over a million in CA is paying more in taxes based on that single aspect at the marginal level.

An Auburn fan that is IGNORANT.....Sounds about normal.

So, this dweeb is probably from New York, and they taxes did go up, because Trumps bill took away their BS Welfare Scheme.

The State could tax New Yorkers 30-40 percent, and the crooked Congress had a law passed way back at some point in time that they could use those State Taxes as a write off to lower their Fed Taxes. This scheme basically meant we the U.S. Taxpayers were paying for New York's HIGH TAX RATES, so basically the State of New York had set up a scheme to shaft the feds out of money. Trump cut out this scheme. So, the reason his taxes went up was because now you had to be the Feds like yo were supposed to, and NY refused to lower their high tax rate.

Simpletons never understand these complex tax racket schemes.

As an auburn graduate, is the first time you made more than minimal wage?

Did you finally get that raise for coloring inside the lines?

I live in Atlanta kind of in between Buckhead and Midtown. You can do the math or most likely, find someone to help you with it.

He, or those he's citing, are playing a game.

"Most of the tax cuts go to the wealthy" - well, when you pay 75% of all income taxes, it's pretty hard to have a tax cut for everybody and not have the most dollar cuts go to the 10% that pay 75% of all income taxes collected.

Middle and low income taxpayers can get a 20% tax cut and their tax savings (collectively) will not equal the total tax savings realized by the top 10% with a 10% tax cut.

The thing that never gets talked about is the number of corporations that passed along their tax savings to employees in the way of increased wages and bonuses.

There's no fricking way you're a middle or low income earner and the only time your taxes went up was under Trump unless you entered a higher tax bracket due to making more money, which would have nothing to do with Trump's tax policy and you wouldn't be considered low or middle income.
