I’m not sure why so many people have a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation in Ukraine, but let’s try it again…

Russia has not mobilized… therefore it has a limited amount of manpower committed to the fight… Ukraine OTOH has mobilized its men of fighting age… manpower isn’t this issue.

This idea that the current Russian ground forces can grind down UAR in the east, then sweep west towards Odessa and then cut off the western border is so completely foolish. They can’t even destroy forces in the east.

Canadian general arrested in Mariupol

The Russian armed forces arrested Canadian General Trevor Kadier in Mariupol on the night of 2-3 May 2022. He is currently in Moscow awaiting to stand trial.

General Trevor Kadier was apparently not on a mission for his government, but was in charge of biolaboratory No. 1, with 18 staff working under his command.

There are a lot of old men in the Ukrainian POW videos. That suggests manpower problems.

The Russians have an absolute advantage in AirPower.

The Ukrainian air force no longer exists in any operational sense. By late March, according to the DoD, the Ukrainians had twenty operational aircraft.

And the Russians have have an overwhelming advantage in artillery.

Between the two, they’re just pummeling the Ukrainians. And it doesn’t slow down much at night. The number of artillery fire missions drops just 20%.

Could be a sign that Ukraine needs the troops. That would give them about 100K to throw into the fight in the east.

I think so

They’re the equivalent of the British Home Guard in WW2. It’s your old men, and the people who otherwise aren’t eligible to fight in the regular army.

This is all laughable… Russia doesn’t have the capability to pull off what it wants to in the Donbas… Odessa is a pipe dream

I didn’t say they would succeed, only that it is what they appear to be attempting

NASA has a set of satellites that monitor fires across the globe. It has come in very useful for seeing exactly where the fighting is occurring in Ukraine.

The NASA tool to view the data is very robust and you can choose from a variety of layers to display. You can also choose a date in time or a date range to view.

This should take you to the Donetsk region where the majority of the fighting is occurring now.

A really good Twitter thread discussing the current state of the Russian offensive

A good twitter thread discussing the compostion of the Russian Army and the impact of their conscript system.

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1521147854949036032.html

How is the Russian regular army composed? The key element is draft. Theoretically every young man between 18-27 y.o. has to serve in the army for a year. In practice however, everyone who can, dodges. So the quotas are filled by the most disadvantaged who didn't or couldn't dodge

Wounded American mercenary Manus McCaffery shares his sad combat experience in a hospital in Zaporozhye. On April 27, Manus McCaffery, a former soldier of the 75th Airborne Reconnaissance Regiment of the US Army, and his accomplice Paul Gray, who served in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, were wounded while trying to fire a Russian tank with a Javelin during the battles for the settlement of Orekhov Zaporizhzhya areas. Manus received multiple shrapnel and penetrating wounds to the head, torso, lower extremities, and Paul's left leg was torn off. Both Americans served as instructors in the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces.

What kind of nonsense of the mentally ill are you reading?
In a number of regions (similar to the US states) we are ready to pay a bribe to get into the army.
Not everyone is accepted into the army. Only one of my sons was in the army, no more

Another one from a parallel universe.
Can you bring a proof, well, at least one how Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014 .... 2019 or any date before February 24, 2022?
And at least one proof when Russia was hiding behind civilians?

Did you actually read the thread? I doubt it.

My two sons in law are both active military, Capt in Army and Gunny in Marines. The military has been good to both of them.

I'm reading the thread. Responding to every crazy message has long been tired.
I live in Russia.
If you really believe in what you write, then for me in parallel.
Reality doesn't reflect it

Following up to my post yesterday about NASA's FIRM system.

I have seen several posts on twitter like this one saying the Ukrainians have begun a major offensive.
https://twitter.com/Nrg8000/status/1522202434692870144

So looking at the NASA data from yesterday and then so far today, you can see the large increase in fires.
