The CEO of Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. told California energy regulators that the state will likely see blackouts for another 10 years like the one imposed last week that left as many as 800,000 customers without power.

The revelation by corporation CEO Bill Johnson came Friday at a California Public Utilities Commission meeting at which he said his company is trying to reduce the chances of wildfires by trimming more trees and using technology to target smaller areas of the grid when fire dangers require power outages.

But Johnson said it could take 10 years before such outages are "really ratcheted down significantly."

Think how much carbon isn’t released though, I thought they loved blackouts

You take for granted the Commifornians ability to over legislate the sales of generators.

You make utilities absolutely liable for fires regardless of fault, this is what you get.

And, ironically for California, batteries.

When I lived in St. Maarten the socialist St. Maarten government had to divert $$$ from maintenance in order to come up with their part of the money to qualify for EU grants for solar power on the island. The island's oil burning power plant was only able to afford to keep one of its five generators working. This caused the island to experience a blackout every time it got over 90°F or was above 80°F and was cloudy. People ended up having to use their backup generators a lot more which caused us to buy more carbon credits from the EU (which were included in our utility bill and nonnegotiable). The last 2 months that I lived there electricity cost over $0.50/KWhr.

Long story short blackouts increase the amount of carbon releases and cost people more, but I bet the lawyers in Cali are about to get paid.

To put that in perspective the typical southerner pays about 10 cents KWhr/maybe slightly more

Lol yeah right. California will probably make a law telling them no generators. Huge fines if caught using them.

Noise pollution. Too loud for the red-headed crown frog and confusing to owls.

this is why they are requiring all new homes to have, I believe 20%, solar power.

How freaking hard is it to run the lines underground. Dont say earthquakes either as that would affect poles as well.

So my understanding was that CA is technically considered somewhat a deregulated state.

Not grasping how they aren't considered regulated. Anyone able to give a simple breakdown of how CA isnt considered "regulated"? TIA

No surprise, generators are already heavily regulated in CA and expensive.

Must have zero emissions to be Cali approved. Just let them sit in dark

Even better - Elon Musk must be salivating over his potential Tesla PowerWall sales. These get both a federal and state tax rebate, generators don’t.

They don’t need too. The Mexicans will slowly take it back by immigration.

He's probably saying blackouts will be normal because he's trying to get more public funding to do whatever needs to be done to avoid starting wildfires.

You may want to pump the brakes.
