The problem is, if you try this, you'll end up with a shite ton of minorities in the supposedly "lower tracks" and everyone will scream racism. This, despite the fact that in such a system, you almost certainly would end up with MASSIVE gains in minority performance and, over time, a leveling of the demographics across the tracks.
But nope. Can't do it. You'll be a racist.
I agree with your entire rationale.
1. Personally, we put way to much emphasis on collegiate education as a society. This is more obvious is primarily academic fields. White tower philosophy has affected our entire culture in the worst of ways, but that's an argument for another time.
2. What people fail to understand about race demographics in education is that most of it is voluntary. Also people would change professions anyway without outside intervention.
Going the vocational track would serve them better than expensive 4 year degrees with no market value.

Well then who the hell was passing these kids if they couldn't read??
Same ones that are passing them in other states now.
The bitching and moaning in 2013 when this was passed was on par with TDS.
The first kids to be held back because of this were paraded on the news to show us how evil we were.
I was in higher by this time, but my old K-12 boss was all over social media pushing for the law to be overturned. She helped lead an effort (that was defeated) to force the state by constitutional amendment to fund education at a level that would have bankrupted us.
The Facebook page still exists (the name changed to Pay Raise for MS teachers) but its still the same old educrats pushing it. Im a member for opposition research, but the crap they spewed during the election was awful. Funny that they haven't posted about these great results.

I love that plan it makes too much sense to ever pass. Would also love it if school would also teach the basics of “adulting” like the importance of good credit, responsible saving, etc to kids in high school too. You could probably get those classes taught and paid for by national banks and Credit Card companies.

Mississippi tried to push mandated personal finance classes through a few years ago. I was told point blank by my state representative that the reason it didn't happen is that the payday lending lobby had too many representatives bankrolled.

I had a brief stint at a Payday lender in 2009. They threatened my job if I didn't sign up for their lobby that the CEO was on the board. Highly illegal. The Republic Finances of the world absolute don't won't personal finance classes in HS. They need to bring back home ec. But call it something like Ec and Tech or something that sounds cool to get the kids to buy in.

That is so frustrating. And now they are coming out with apps that let you payday loan from your phone so you don’t even have to leave your house. I get ads for them all the time so I know they are targeting young people on purpose.

Sounds like 'Big Pharma' and the US Congress.

The Mississippi education success story has been posted on this board a few times now and I don't think I will ever get tired of reading about it. It's absolutely fascinating in its simple, common sense approach. I can only hope this spreads.
It's better for society to have a better educated populace, and Mississippi is building a foundation for the future of their state with this. It's exciting to see.
And I genuinely enjoy reading the comments in these threads and the discussions that happen.

Folks like you area saint. Thank you for doing this.
One thing I haven't read in this thread is the subject of dyslexia. How do y'all identify, diagnose and treat those students with dyslexia? What methods do they then use? OG?
Curious to read your thoughts if you have a moment!
